More cyclists!

Postby eucryphia » Mon Mar 15, 2010 10:20 pm

What's happening!

There was almost a traffic jam of bikes this afternoon on the southern shore of the lake, I had to slow down!

And this morning at the Commonweath Ave off ramp to Parkes way the cars couldn't get through the line of bikes in the bike lane

Clayton's critical mass, or did the Sixty Minutes item inspire some folks?

I thought it might be the road works going on in Canberra providing inspiration for people to dust off their bikes and ride.

The last couple of times I commuted through Civic and around LBG I was astounded by the number of cyclists. It seems to have doubled (or tripled) over the last few months.

You could be right David,

The Kings Ave roundabout with the ANZAC drive work has caused havoc on the roads.

My bus Co. is altering their timetable because they can't make their stops on time.

A lot of old 'back of the shed' bikes are out, some still have the cobwebs...

Agreed - the roadworks and traffic jam situation is really nuts at the moment.

Wait till it hits -7. Should thin out by then!

Yeah, I was about to suggest it will cool off (pun entirely intended) once winter hits.

I think this is the calm between the 'too hot' and 'too cold' riders. It sure is busy out there. Fortunately, I ride unpopular routes mostly, so no jam for me.

I'm going to hibernate for winter. I think.

Actually, not sure what I'm going to do. Hate the trainer, can't train in low temps without getting injured. Maybe keep a roadie at work, commute on the hybrid and train in the middle of the day.

Winter sucks big time.

Thats good news. I have been chasing your kms for weeks without any progress. I only missed 6 days commute last year. :P Winter is OK with good gear. Which reminds me, i need new gloves and some booties.

I get knee problems every year riding in the cold.

PS - I'm now 164km ahead of you. And I'm riding out to Lake George tomorrow morning.

How the farquhar??? I am most of the way through a 300km week and you are still that much ahead? I havent uploaded my data from today, but that doesnt make sense. I have put in a big effort week. I am doing the bakery bunch tomorrow, and will probably hit out 30 odd kms on Sunday with my boy in the trailer, so hopefully I can drag you back to within 80kms.

edit: just logged. 124kms ahead. DavidH is catching up slowly but surely too.

Just logged 80kms. Nice ride with the bakery bunch. A little slower than usual, but still fun. At least I was still amongst the front group at the Fed. Even took a turn on the front. I will have to get a few more K's in today and tomorrow just to stay in touch... If Im honest, I reckon the K's I do with my son in the trailer count for at least half again. So my 20km rides are really 30 km rides. Heh heh...

Oh, dear. Up to 22'nd place.

17.12 on the trainer last night (getting used to it again), and a ride out to Lake George this morning (81.92). Probably about 55km tomorrow, 42km race, plus ride from where I'll park and back again.

The trainer doesn't count for BikeJournal... but I'm still 134.7km ahead, mrgolf. 8)

How in the world did this thread start out on a discussion about the increased number of cyclists seen out and about in Canberra and end up as a competition about who has logged the most kms on BikeJournal? Or are you trying to make the point that BikeJournal is somehow responsible for the increased number of riders out there?

I just had a quick 25km ride up to Hall and back and didn't see anyone else out there riding. Mind you, not the best time of the day to ride. Hot and windy.

Because we are all competitive gits.

I left home at 5:46 this morning - didn't see anyone until past the gravel pit on the way home. And it got down to 11C this morning.

I'm stocking up on super roubaix and investing in some kick a$$ gloves and some booties and a very thin beanie... I would still rather freeze to death than commute in a car.

Twiz, if your previous best was 360, congrats on the new PB last week. Serious K's. I hit 320 odd. You must have clocked up over 420-430? Good work.

Well, I was in Canberra this weekend and connived to sneak in a 1hr ride on a rental on Friday afternoon. I enjoyed it enough to do another on Saturday and Sunday too.... Brilliant place to live..
