Guyatt bikes- any out there?

Postby Spirit of Herb » Wed Mar 17, 2010 11:30 pm

Hi, I am trying to track down a Guyatt bike, built between 1930-1960 by my legend Uncle Herb Guyatt, who raced alongside Oppy. they were built in Gippsland, Victoria. I just want one for sentimental value.

Is he related to Billy Guyatt?

Wow ... that's a lot of cycling history you've got on your family 8)

I've not seen a Guyatt bike unfortunately but I hope someone reading this might know of one or help direct you.

Sorry I have never seen a Guyatt bike. I did however have a quick look through some papers I have here and found some clippings on your family. If you want copies let me know. Some I have doubles so I can send you originals if you like.

Below is an excerpt from one which I found interesting. (Courtesy of the N.T News July 15 1964.)

Great articles, I'll pass them on to Herb's widow, she'll love them. my side of the family picked up the guns in Sale also, pity they didn't pick up cycling (although our gene pool is a bit shallower!)

If you send me a PM I can pass on my email address and send some of these to you for Herb's wife if you like.

I have a folder here with cuttings and info on the Guyatt's. Predominately Billy, but I am sure Herb's wife will enjoy reading them.

I have learnt that Billy was quite the salesman and whilst suspended from cycling he set a record and sold 90 vacumn cleaners in 90 days!

I also found this one on Herb.

Sorry Karen, the National Library newspapers only go to 1954. :(

But I found an account of Herb Guyatt winning the first Phillip Island bicycle Grand Prix in 1935. Plenty more at the National Library. Guyatt is an unusual name, so not too hard to find articles.

Are you looking for a bike with 'Guyatt Special' branding, or did he make bikes with other branding/decals? Warren

According to his wife, he made the bikes featuring calligraphy styled decals, not the block upper case. so the former, do you know of any? :o

I have a frame that came from Maffra that I was told had been built by Herb, but it has been repainted with house paint many years ago and there are no remaining decals. I think Billy Guyatt rode for Master Sports for much of his career, but that doesnt help you much in looking for a 'Guyett Special', or one of Herb's bikes. A 'wanted to buy' ad in the local Sale paper 'Gippsland Times' will probably turn one up, as there must be quite a few still around. Warren

No bike here unfortunately but you have reminded me of something...

I was speaking with a gentleman in Victoria last week who is compiling records and cycling history. I mentioned you and Herb etc and he is keen for you to get in touch with him. He is keen to record any info you or your aunt may recall on Herb, Billy and also their father.

If this is of interest to you, let me know and I can PM his contact details to you.

Karen.

I have a 1950's Guyatt Special step through ladies frame and forks.
This bike has never been assembled and is in orginal black with "Guyatt Special" sign written in gold on lower tube. Two transfers, one on the headstem and one on the seat stem read "built by H.Guyatt sale". The one just above the seat stem reads "air craft tubing" "Renolds 531" "Precision always".
The frame and paintwork is in original condition with only some small paint chips. Two transfers are perfect, one transfer is average.
A stamped number on the seat stem is 1083.
With some T.L.C this bike will bring it back to its glory days. If you wish to see photos please contact me, or for any further information.
