This is a really interesting thread, Twiz, I weight around 105, actually been 105 for 12 months now. More climbing and time trialling has improved my weight has stayed the same. But Im now seeing a top sports nutritionist which will undoubtely help me a lot.

I've floated between 102 and 105 for the last year. Dieting = no performance.

But...

Dive, Dive! 98.7kg (99.1kg after dinner) and descending!

And despite stuffing my face and making myself feel sick with food today... heading towards a 3K-Kj deficit for the day.

Well at least that's one good thing out of that eh?

What bug, do they know? Can't they just kill it? (yeah it'll kill lots of other bits and pieces too, eating zero polysaccharides surely can't be the lesser evil).

Erythromycin? From playing with staph aureus of the not-so-friendly kind?

Personal experience : I blow up in no time at all... like I did yesterday.

Erythromycin for prostitis as a follow on from a UTI.

April/May 2005... I had a milkshake one Sunday night, couldn't stop burping. The following afternoon, while drinking a ginger beer I had a searing pain in the chest - I though I was having a heart attack : the hiatus hernia coming into being. Everything went downhill from there. Shortness of breath, couldn't sleep on my back (felt like I was stopping breathing at the point of falling alseep), started feeling stressed, vague/floaty, couldn't eat much as my stomach seemed to be full all the time, and burping like a champion. Five doctors ("you're just stressed") and some hospital trips in the middle of the night ("we think you have reflux") before I got a referral to a specialist, by which time I'd lost 16kg. September : the gastroscopy showed "mild chronic inflammation of the duodenum" and I was missing three out of the four disaccharide digestive enzymes due to damage to the villi - same basic effect as celiac disease. The specialist (no idea what to do), referred me to a dietician... who also had no idea how to treat it. Three months later, I was a f'in wreck, depression and anxiety, startle reflex out of control, living on ~six hours sleep a night. It was in January 2006 when someone on the failsafe food list posted a mention of the "specific carbohydrate diet"... which got me back on my feet mentally/physically in about three months. And by the end of 2006 I'd put all of the missing weight back on.

Interesting thing : I always thought the startle reflex issue was due to post traumatic stress disorder, but it came back last week with a vengance when it all went downhill again.

So... I'm pretty sure I have (again) damaged villi in the small intestine and bacteria where bacteria aren't supposed to be. But, f'me - I couldn't lose any weight last year and I've gone from 103.7 down to 98.7 in the space of a few weeks! Coming to get you, TLL! And, most importantly : THIS time I know how to deal with it.

Except, it's going to kill my race performance.

Just dug out the biopsy report : "Mild non-specific chronic duedonitis" and negligible enzyme levels for Lactase, Sucrase and Maltase enzymes. And isomaltase is the 4'th enzyme, and it's no use to me anyway.

You ain't going to get anybody losing 5 kilos in a couple of weeks  .
I am running 500 Kcal deficit a day...from Monday to Thursday...Fri-Sun I am eating and not counting cals so closely (race days)...
...but I was a 94 kilos in June last year too...so it can go pear shaped pretty quick if I am not pretty anal.
My numbers are still going up.Only my hip holding me back  .But as long as I am sub 90kgs by end of May I will be happy.Anymore will just be a bonus when I am hanging on for dear life to the bunch on my 10 km long stage race climbs in June!...eek.

In a cycle race maybe, but let's see who gets to 90Kg first. :) Mind you, I'm going to be a wreck at that point. :(

Having a very 'spacey' day today.

Twizzle - you have some interesting challenges. The medical is beyond my area of expertise, so I wish you well in nailing some solutions that work well.

Some medical investigation simply rules stuff out and it can be frustrating when answers are not forthcoming. Have been through that with several clients, although not with respect to weight and/or metabolic matters. Normally unusual allergies or food type intolerance.

Sometimes it's lot of little changes that make the difference.

I'm getting the hang of it now. Lots of fruit... lots and lots of fruit. Eggs, meat, cheese, more fruit.

Having bonked 45 minutes into a training ride in the middle of the week, I was expecting a bad race yesterday, but it all seemed to come together - except for the weather which was atrocious and I got dropped on a descent because I decided that staying upright was more important than staying with the bunch. I reckon I rode at least 35km of the 58km race on my own, and I didn't start to run out of puff until about the 48km mark, but I'd also toasted my back and that always makes it hard to make power. 316W average, 1930Kj at the wheel and I didn't bonk!
