Flandis has stuffed up.

Landis also states that Armstrong in 2002 “while winning the Tour de Swiss, the month before the Tour de France, tested positive for EPO at which point he and Mr Bruyneel flew to the UCI headquarters and made a financial agreement with Mr. Verbruggen to keep the positive test hidden.” Mr Verbruggen was at that time the president of the International Cycling Union UCI.

Lance never competed in the Tour de Swiss in 2002, so how could have he tested positive? LA however did compete and win the 2001 race. Hope he got the dates wrong if not what a dick he has made of himself once again.

There is a bit of talk going on about the Armstrong payment to the UCI that seems to be a major factor in all of this for some reason.

http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/mcquaid ... -a-mistake

Now before I say anything Id just like to mark where I stand. I like Lance as a rider and cancer fundraiser, yes he is an arrogant pr**k at times but I can live with that (so was Don Bradman). I also believe he took EPO or some other PED at some stage of his career, along with 95% of the peleton. Pantani obviously took it yet never lost his grand tour titles so why should Lance if found that he did so long after the fact?

Anyway, they are saying it is so sus of him to donate money to the UCI, and that no one has ever done it before. But how many cyclists have made the money he has from riding bikes? I bet no one has even gotten remotely close, so how would anyone else be able to spare $100,000 to give away. Also as arrogant as he can be, he doesnt seem above helping people and donating to causes. Cycling gave him everything he has, why not give something back? It does seem like bad timing, but as the article says, no allegations were made public at that point so what would he be bribing for. And the money was pledged in 2002 but never paid till 2005 after he retired! If it was for a bribe he was pretty damn tardy in making sure his cover up was kept secret. Id have the money to them that day if I was covering my ass!! So maybe it is as innocent as they say and not linked to any doping after all.

Or maybe it really was!!

I am not going to put in an opinion on Lance - however if he was riding unethically during all of his tour wins, then for his riding now - a pretty fine effort (2009 Giro) for someone who has a few years under his belt and is now clean (or is there another conspiracy?)

Would Armstrong be able to achieve more - or less on the road and with the charity when his guilt was never questioned. I think that being a controversial character helps.

some people believe doping controls have been progressively tightened since 98-99 and that riding clean now permits competing on more of a level playing field than back then, which would help explain LA's continued competitiveness. but that's just speculation.

Interesting point jules21 ... and more interesting considering more recent known dopers.

On a positive note - looks like the 2009 le tour has ended up positively after-all as usually doping reports first appear months afterwards, so 2009 wasn't as controversial as previous years in this aspect.

I wonder if anyone may be getting a little nervous now. Fraud charges have been spoken of so it gets a bit serious now. Although if they try bringing those charges against anyone Floyd named, how on earth doesnt he get thrown in jail for taking $1 million of the public!!
