I bought a Reid Condor just last week, after seeing an ad for one on Gumtree. I then visited his website and was impressed by the way it looked. A $299 bike that looks like a proper road bike? I was sold. I was also incredibly drawn to the idea that James Reid sells the bikes himself, out of his own residence - it's one of the ways in which he says he is able to keep the costs of the bike so low, since he doesnt have to rent a shop, pay overheads and shell out for advertising. Anyway, I gave him a call and went down to see the bike in person. James is really nice and I was sold on the bike within five minutes.
The price was one of the main motivations for me to get the Reid, because all I needed was a cheap commuter that I could park around the city without fear of having it stolen. The look of the Reid was the other - it's simple and sleek - I couldn't find a nicer bike for the same kind of money.
Now, on to my review of the bike, having ridden it in all kinds of weather in the last week or so. I have to say that it has strengths in some areas, and weaknesses in others. Its strengths are I believe in its ride quality. It's nimble, quick accelerating and handles relatively well. The frame is relatively stiff as well. The Shimano SIS drivetrain shifts crisply and consistently.
However, when you start to look in other areas, you start to realise why the Reid is priced so cheaply. In particularly, I am finding the brakes leave much to be desired. The no-brand (that I can discern, anyway) single-pivot side pull brakes are weak and hard to adjust properly. On my front brake, one side tends to stick to the rim after braking, and attempts to re-centre it generally don't seem to work. However, after I sent it to a bike shop to have it looked at, they have appeared to fix the problem. But the power still leaves much to be desired.
So now, I am thinking of upgrading the brakes to dual pivot ones. But then again, I am hesitant, because I believe that spending additional money on this bike would be to miss the point entirely of buying a $299 bike.
Basically it boils down to this. It's cheap, and it works. But don't expect miracles from this bike! If you buy this bike with the intention of upgrading anything, then might I suggest you expand your budget little and look somewhere else first before deciding.

I have owned a Reid condor road bike for almost a year. I bought it from reid cycles in albert park in melbourne for $299.
I absolutely love the bike, I ride approx 100kms per week and it hasnt missed a beat.
Originally I bought the bike to get fit however since then I have competed in some smaller corporate triathlons and the round the bay in a day and the bike performed extremely well.
The bike is definately great value for money, looks great, performs well and most importantly is reliable and easy to maintain.
For someone looking to buy an entry level road bike its definately worth a look.

James from Reid Cycles here.
I would just like to add to the post Mark left.
He is correct about the brakes having issues with pulling to the side and not being super strong. This was our first shipment of bikes which had single pivot brakes.
Our new 2010 models we have upgraded the brakes to Promax dual pivot brakes, the dual pivot brakes provide fantastic stopping power.
We also upgraded the stem and seatpost to Promax, which are a great manufacturer in Taiwan.
We also upgraded the freewheel to a Shimano freewheel.
It makes me very proud to say we have currently sold over 150 of our 2010 models and havent had any warranty issues at all.
Kind regards
James Reid

The bike runs like clock work, nice and smooth. I have had this bike since December 2009 and have not yet had any faults with it.
I highly recommend this bike to you. crazzydude101@hotmail.com

His bikes will allow me to enter this realm of cycling, yet I still believe mountain bikers to be the friendliest of cyclists.
I also appreciate his response and not backing down from what Mark said and acting on it.

I bought one of the Condor flatbars last december. I was after a commuter to get me from sandringham to the city everyday as well as weekend rides down beach road.
I used to ride alot a few years ago but didnt want to spend a lot for a commuter as I lock it up on the street at work.
For the price($299) which was about my budget, I was very surprised at the good quality.
I shopped around for a while (ebay, 2nd hand bikes, Local bike stores and Kmart etc) and found these to be by far the best value I could find.
Ive easily done over 7000kms and the bike still rides great. As a result there are 4 of my friends riding these around now.
All I have bought is new set of tires which reid cycles sold me for next to nothing.
very happy

All this talk of "spammers" is quite interesting, it seems on some forums any sort of positive comments are seen as "spam" while negitive and cynical views are the norm.
I can honestly say that everyone that has left positive comments on this blog are genuine customers.
If anyone wants to see feedback from genuine customers please check out our ebay feedback page.

P.S Also just a notice we have some singlespeed/fixies arriving next week on the 18th june.

Hi James. On the contrary, on this forum we welcome reports of positive experiences and praise for good shops; while discouraging 'naming and shaming' brands that members have had trouble with. As I'm sure you can understand though, it does ring alarm bells when several new members appear with apparently no other purpose than to promote a certain brand, then dissapear without trace.Reid Cycles wrote:James from Reid Cycles here.

We also welcome genuine participation from shop and brand owners; however you will understand that taking the rough commentary with the smooth is part and parcel of promoting your brand in a public environment.
Please note that I have removed the eBay link from your post in accordance with site guidelines.

It is more entertaining to leave it this thread here than to remove it.
James if you actually know all of these people (genuine customers) and by some strange coincidence, they have all been acting independently without any instruction or influence on your part - I recommend contacting them and asking them to be more cautious in their attempt to support and promote you - as it is not working. For 99% of us it just looks like spam.
