Selle SMP
Postby mountainman403 » Sun May 04, 2008 10:19 am
Anyone got or used a selle SMP seat. Thats the one with a huge gap the entire leingth and sloping front.
I tend to get numb after an hour of seated climbing (thats all i do) and am looking for a new saddle. I have read that it was designed with medical specialists and helps blood flow and soft tissue pressure. I have also been reading about impotence and erectile disfunction (dosnt effect me, Im married)
Just got to get over the look .

I went for an hour and a half hard climb last night and found the saddle to be firm in its padding but comfortable, around the 45 min to 1hr mark still going strong and after the 1.5 hours no numbness at all. I think the saddle is tops just a bit firm but I will get used to it, didnt stop the huge calf cramps I have been getting for the past 2 weeks or the trashed legs I have today.

Cramps are often attributed to dehydration, try drinking more water and ensure you don't get dehydrated before, during or after the ride. A bit of powerade mixed in with your water will also assist.mountainman403 wrote:Thanks to Toolonglegs I am the proud owner or his saddle. (Thanks for that, I know you were moving and all).

I've got a selle italia SLR T1 and it is reasonably comfortable though I stand up at regular intervals and find this improves blood flow to the nether regions.mountainman403 wrote:I find that I no longer get numb but it is a bit firm, sort of comfortable but a little to firm. Maybe my sit bones are a bit to wide and the soft tissue is taking some of my weight.

Saddles are just too personal to take anyone's suggestions. I tried out a Selle Italia SLR gel flow and it gave me bruised sit bones after around 5 mins. Stuck with it for a couple of weeks, but just never got on with it at all. May as well have taken a brick and stuck that on the seatpost. However, there are plenty that swear by this saddle.
Picked up a battered old Flite (no gel) and that was a lot better. I've gotten on with a WTB Rocket V and a standard Velo saddle that came with a bike, so I'm not sure there is a surefire way to find a saddle besides trying them out.

Basically, in Selle Italia terminology, "Gel Flow" = anatomical cut-out for the perineum (and they use some gel to smooth it out I think). There isn't a whole lot of "gel" that is actually there.
The SLC is a bit harder / firmer on the sit bones than the Flite, and has a larger cut out, but they otherwise have a similar fit. I personally find both these saddles quite comfortable, but they do need a bit of breaking in.
I find that the SLC is rather similar to the Specialized Toupe that I had previously, but a little bit softer and having a more comfortable cutout.
Cheers.

When seated on the SMP saddle, the seat should be set so that about half of your weight rests against the wider rear part of the seat and the other half on your sit bones. This may mean tilting the seat more forward than with just about any other type of saddle. I also suffered from sore sit bones until I researched the above hint.mountainman403 wrote:I find that I no longer get numb but it is a bit firm, sort of comfortable but a little to firm. I've also got this SMP saddle which cost $42 from c r c. This may be a solution for you if you get sore sit bones. Not a light weight saddle, but luxuriously padded. At first I thought it was too soft but it has tested very well.

it did however take me about 1 month(8x 80kms rides) to get totally use to it
once it has been set up correctly, it feels very comfortable (you will just feel it when it is set up correctly)

Easy and quick method :Mulger bill wrote:Does anybody know a good way to measure sit bone width and maintain some semblance of dignity?
Shaun
Sit on double wall corrugated cardboard, preferably naked and use the clean cardboard
Then you just measure the distance between dimples in the cardboard
