Spratt and Kitchen on the podium in France

Postby Ross » Wed Jun 09, 2010 5:46 pm

Team AIS rider Amanda Spratt (NSW), 22, has sprinted home to another victory in Europe this time winning the final criterium stage of the Ronde de Bourgogne (Tour of Burgandy) in France.

French rider Emilie Blanquefort was one second behind Spratt whose team mate South Australian Carlee Taylor, 21, crossed the line 58 seconds later for third place.

A week ago Spratt won the Grand Prix de Beauraing in Belgium and carried that form with her to the three stage French tour.

The Ronde de Bourgogne began with a 112km road stage where AIS rider Lauren Kitchen, 19, finished second behind France's Pascale Jeuland (Vienna Futuroscope) after the pair staged an early breakaway that saw them riding together in front for more than 100km. At one point the pair was almost eight minutes up on the bunch and at the finish still held a 4:41 advantage which set them up as the favourites to challenge for the overall win.

Stage 2 was a fierce battle between the Australian and the Vienna Futuroscope teams as they contested a team time trial. Jeuland went in to the stage wearing the leader's jersey but tied on time with Kitchen. Despite a solid performance by the AIS women the locals pulled out a big ride to finish ten seconds faster.

Overall tour honours went to Jeuland (Vienna Futuroscope) with Armidale's Kitchen second overall. Spratt's win in the criterium stage moved her into third overall. Kitchen also won the Climber's and Best Young Rider classifications and the team fnished on top of the Teams Classification.
