so when it's raining and you hit the gym, what do you d0?

Postby BarryTas » Fri Jun 11, 2010 11:10 am

When it rains on the weekend i hit the gym. I live around the corner from the gym :D . There are limited classes on during the weekend so i do my own thing. I send a few hours on a bike, then do legs weights and core workouts oh and jump on the rowing machine. I am currently looking into doing some ball work for core/legs.

What do other peeps do?
when do we stop for coffee???

Spin class.

If I have anything left after that I'll do free weights and cable machine 1exercises set by my physio for post-op shoulder rehab, and core some strength work.

Last time I had nothing left after the spin class...

I do 45 minutes on the exercise bike at a certain cadence (90-110rpm depending on what mood I'm in) with my heart rate controlled automatically by the bike (it adjusts the gearing as you go along to keep your heart rate steady) at 156bpm (this is easier to do if you wear a Polar heart strap). I keep a record of how many calories the bike (I always use the same bike) thinks I have expended in each workout so that I can see if I'm improving over time. I currently manage about 410 calories per half hour (I can do more calories at 90rpm than I can at 105rpm). This might be a good way to work out your ideal cadence.

Then an hour of resistance training. Chest and triceps on Monday, legs and lower back on Wednesday, biceps and upper back on Friday.

generally depends on my mood, but usually stuff like:

cleans (or associated assistance exercises)
snatches (as above)
deadlifts
squats (have been a wuss lately and been avoiding squats)
bench (so I'm not too bottom heavy)
OHP (as above)
pullups (I dunno, just cos)
core stuff (hanging leg raises, barbell rollouts, planks)

but I go even when it's not raining 8)

cardio in a gym is booooring

If I hit the gym because of foul weather, I do something which has nothing to do with cycling, just to do something different.

This could be weights, treadmill, stairclimber, a game of squash, perving, whatever.

I find it fun to do something different, and happy when the weather improves, that I can get out on the bike again.

Foul weather stopping bike riding just emphasises how important it is to make the most of every ride, and not think that I'll take it easy today and give it a real go tomorrow, as tomorrow might get washed out.

Did a new spin class this morning - they tested a new program out on us called "group ride".

I'd have been at 90-95% of my highest observed HR Max for 30 of the 50 minutes. My highest observed exercise induced max is 180, and I was sitting at 160-170 for the middle 30, with a peak of 175 and average of 154. The off-the-saddle bits were the recovery!

Glad I had a recovery week in the lead-up to this morning.
