Nipple soreness

Postby novice » Sun Jun 06, 2010 10:57 pm

Now don't you lot laugh, but I was wondering if any other males has ever suffered from nipple soreness during or after a ride.
I sweat a bit and the T shirt sometimes causes irritation on the nipples.
Wondering if you have any remedies, (and keep it clean please).

bandaids over nipples to stop rubbing.
A marathon runner told me about this.

+1

I've only had it happen once, it was a wet and long (120k) ride, but in every other way perfectly normal...ie normal cycling cyothes etc.

I was literally bleeding by the time I got home  ! Had to do the band aid thing for the next few rides but haven't had trouble since (and don't wear the band aides anymore thankfully). Worst part was getting the band aides off the chest hair!!!!

+1 again.

Once off occurrence, thanksfully.

Sometimes it's just one of those things ? Maybe like sit bones, after a while, they toughen up !!! :o

Sure have, a couple of times on longer rides, its no fun!

Mostly due to loose material we choose in a shirt. The trendy lycra roadie tops that are tighter fitting can cure it, but if you are like me and don't enjoy looking like a rolling billboard then I've found rubbing something like sudocrem on yer nips before a ride really helps.

Guess you could shave around your nipples, might help with the bandaid removal  :D

Whilst playing football, I always used vasoline if I encountered this problem.

+1 or get a new jersey.

Can't say it's ever happened with a cycling jersey but I have a synthetic running top that I swore had torn off my nipples after a tri-athlon. OW!

Never wore it again.

so is it the loose fitting clothing that is causing the problem or the lycra?
I would have thought the problem was caused primarily by acrylic clothing, (poly cotton, and stuff like that). If I wear 100% cotton t-shirts under my cycling jersey I have no problems. But poly cotton t-shirts can dry the skin out a bit and lead to sensitive skin :)

Once I stopped laughing, I cringed at the idea. But then I laughed again.

A mate gave away an Aldi jersey for that reason. Cheap and nasty? I love my Castelli, Cannondale, Icebreaker, even a Route 7.

Ask a new nursing mother about nipple soreness!

If you want you can wear a tighter undershirt/singlet. When i do adventure race stuff, i wear one of those 'skins' shirts and never had a problem as theres no friction between skin and material. Tighter = better.

Cmon, you know you wanna show off that cycling bod.... :D

Having copped this when I was a runner, it is really painful and kinda embarassing when you rock up with two red dots on your T shirt. One solution is Bodyglide which you rub over your nips and other areas prone to chafing..... Yes I even use it down south. Works a treat whether cycling or running. Get it from your LBS or Rebel.

Happened again today after a 2 hour ride in the freezing morning frost.
Blood all over the T Shirt.
Christ it hurts.
Will have to remember to use vaseline, or band aids in future.
My wife got this silly grin on her face when I told her what was wrong then she burst out laughing when I put some band aids on to stop the bleeding.
Soon wiped the smile off her face when she had to wash the shirt.

I went with Ti in mine (I was having a slight reaction problem with the stainless rings that were put in when they got peirced), but I still have problems with them catching on the edge of my bibs.
I've never had any problem from them rubbing on my shirt though....

Somehow I can just not ever see me putting carbon fibre jewlery into any of my peircings.

Invest in a 2XU, Underarmour or Skins shirt.

Good for two things - keeps the chill off the front (and we know what happens to nipples when the get chilled 8) ) and provides something for your jersey (which would be better than a teeshirt) to rub against instead of your nipples.

I started riding in tee shirts but they get wet, flap like a sail and can make you colder (wind chill via evaporation). The only time I had bleeding nipples was 20 kms into the ATB 210KM when it was gold and wet (no under shirt).

Worn a Skin ever since - sans probleme

Aerobars will probably let your jersey drop away from your nipples and make you faster!

... I have never been so glad to have to wear a bra. (No, not a male.) I have used the bandaid thing before, though, when I stupidly wore a lace bra to work and all the chafing at the sides had me almost bleeding :( I was so cranky with people laughing at this I almost punched them in the face

SHE had to wash it! Dangerous words Sir!
The price she pays for laughing and buying a fancy front loading washing machine that is too technically challenging for a mere male like me
Well thats what I tell her anyway

Yep, get it all the time. At first I thought it was because I was over weight and man-!! BAN ME NOW FOR SWEARING !! was the problem. Fixed that and lost the weight. Thought it was the fabric so moved from a tee-shirt (very bad idea), to cheapy bibs (better idea), now to some good DBH bibs. The problem has lessened but still get sore especially after 3-4hrs on the bike. Plus also I sweat like a pig so I think for me its a combination of things.

Have you guys ever thought of wearing a sports bra?

Although I must admit explaining why you shave your legs and wear a bra to your friends could be a bit tricky ...
