Damn rain! 1st crash in 20 years!

Postby thomashouseman » Fri Jun 25, 2010 8:25 am

Just like Timguy here: http://www.bicycles.net.au/forums/viewt ... 12&t=29203
I had my first crash in 20 years on Wednesday riding home in the rain.
It was on the corner of South and Clyde St's in Rydalmere at the roundabout where it joins the bike track.
No idea what happened. One second I was watching the traffic, the next sliding along the road thinking... must roll more, I can feel myself sliding on the one spot too much. Needless to say I now have a shoulder, elbow, hip, upper thigh, knee and ankle all with missing skin. Thankfully none of them too bad. The upper thigh being the worst (and that's what I thought I was sliding on too much (mentioned above)).

Many thanks go out to the unknown ute driver who was behind me that stopped the traffic and helped pick me and the bike up. also for the kind offer to dry off/patch myself up, and the offer to throw the bike into the back of the ute and drive me home.

I declined though.. didn't want to bleed all over his ute. I gingerly hobbled home in granny gear as I stuffed my front derailleur and had the wife patch me up. Remind me to take panadol first before jumping into the shower to clean up all the gravel rash next time! Ouch!

p.s. You sure slide a long way in the wet. I must have slid at least 5-10 metres before gently bumping into the gutter/ditch thinghamy.

Its times like these you need to remember a few phrases...

ohhh, does it hurt?
"machines dont feel pain"

ohhh you're bleeding!
"i aint got time to bleed"

Hope it all mends quickly. Glad it's not too serious.

Which way were you headed? Uphill or down, oil on the road? I ride through there every day, work is just around the corner in Euston St.

I aint got time to bleed.... I like it.

Downhill. But it was raining. I'd claimed the lane and was taking it quite slowly. (Probably not slowly enough now though it seems)

I'm pretty sure I must have hit oil as I wasn't even turning yet. I came off as I entered the roundabout and slid all the way through it ending up on the other side if it near the grassy bike track bit. So glad I'd claimed the lane though. The nice man in the ute behind me stopped me getting squashed by other cars. It was quite busy.

Fortunately the couple of times I've come off while not just clip-stacking sideways I've either come to a quick stop (course bitumen) or rolled a lot (M7 cycleway). Never much skin off but a landing directly on my knee a year ago still hasn't come completely right.

Can someone explain to me how I can get a freaking large patch of gravel rash and the knicks that stayed over them are fully intact with no tears in them? Has anyone else seen this phenomenon?

knicker rash!!!!

If you can't explain the crash (eg hit a painted line) and went down so fast its quite likely a diesel spill is involved, especially at entry/exit points on roundabouts, usually from trucks with overfilled tanks and sloppy caps. That stuff is lethal in the wet.

Too right, I saw where a vehicle had dropped diesel through a roundabout on a rainy day and about five cars were parked off the road on the embankment on one side of the roundabout after spinning out and mounting the kerb. Later that day after all the cars were moved away the road was cleaned up. It is nearly invisible in the rain and can cover the width of the roadway. I stay in the vehicle tyre tracks in those conditions.

yeah the knicks material has caught on the road and abraded against your skin, but not enough to tear the knicks themselves. i've had that.

One advantage of dropping it in the rain is, you don't leave as much skin on the tarmac.
My first off in the rain was at the start of a down hill run, tyres slipped on the edge of the the road onto gravel with big stones and face planted a sandstone bank. One broken nose and a buckled front wheel later not fun. :(
I don't suffer fools easily and so long as you have done your best, you should have no regrets.
