You're going to drive me nuts with that sort of adventure.
The last "across the paddock" ride inspired me to do a ride I talked about a lot and always said but, but, but... You know how it goes and although I found it hard it was doable. This also led me to join in some of the Vic Audax rides which also nearly killed me (starting with legs, then lungs and finally my brain) but I did it. You've proven to me that if you put your mind to it... You have to train too. Just don't tell me that you don't.
Anyway, I assume you will be riding the VK2. Will you be making any changes from the West/East ride? You'll be riding in the tropics and later down South when the snow season starts.
Will we be able to send you letters or email along the way to encourage you a bit?
Is there anything you need and asking for a tailwind might be a stretch though.
You can be sure I'll be following your progress.
All the best Poiter,
regards,
william

Yes, it's the VK2 again, but not as we know it Jim.
It's had a few additions for this trip:
- A new front and rear wheel both up from 20 spoke to 24
- A SON 20R dyno front hub to run primary light - P4 Cree LED
- A "slightly" modified M5 tailfairing (1.3kg) which now has an internal wheel well and top access hatch
- Lots of reflective tape
- A couple of Tioga DualEyes tail lights (you need to check these out for visibility - the new high mark)
Will be running the same gear otherwise although I am hanging out for new shifter and derailleur which I think is Ash bound somewhere in Europe.
Not carrying a lot more gear than last time - the extra space inside the box will be good though.
Small tarp, Thermalite sleeping bivvy and insect net weighs about 600g for overnights where no accommodation.
I bought a new generation SPOT2 tracker so you can follow my travels virtually.
Set up a Yahoo groups site for manging all the emails and messages.
My new Telstra phone is not bad for reading messages but keep 'em short.
Messages to the Yahoo group will come to me on my Hotmail on the phone.
Please send messages.
Supposedly the Next G coverage will better than hopeless Optus last time.
SPOT Tracking page http://www.trackleaders.com/aroundoz
Yahoo Group http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/PoitAroundOz
Anyway, that's my story and come next Saturday night 1st May at midnight, I'll be off North.
Pete

Where and what type of 24h hubs did you get as I need a new rear 24h 135mm hub?
thanks

Late edit - You could also try for a Velocity 24 hole hub or full wheel, but they don't seem too helpful in Australia (even though they live here).

Yes I think 375 km today, I think, from Camooweal out to Barkley homestead and then turned North up to the Carpentaria Hwy. Wouldn't be too surprised to see him make Daley Waters tomorrow.william wrote:This guy amazes me.

Border patrol at WA says he needs a flag cos truckies cannot see him.... Wha...
Only if they don't look.
I think Poit is travelling over some of the desolate areas of Australia now with temps around 30 midday. Halls Creek is next with 360 k of nothing along the road. Going the west route of Lake Argile will see him going upwards of 300 metres altitude, twice as high as the east side.
I also looked at his route through Melbourne and has Marked an area going over the West Gate Bridge. Thats a no go road for cyclists and don't know if he's aware of it or has special dispensation.
Maybe an escort of cyclists for him going through Melbourne would help or would that disrupt the unassisted mode? Hmm!

Watching Spot now as Poit bears down on Sydney.
Not long now. What a magnificent effort it has been.

Pleased he got the record and happy to see the previous record holder, Eric Staarup, had been following and graciously handed the record over to him with congratulations also. They'll both know its no ride around the park and doubt either will want to do it again.
When I saw pics of him from the North West I had fears he wouldn't make it after losing a lot of his gained time and that he looked like he lost a lot of weight. But as he neared greater (?) civilisation he picked up again. Phew! I thought.
I wondered what sort of spirits he may have been in when you saw him.
regards and congrats to the Poit.
