DT Swiss 240 Free Hub trashed

Postby RobRollin » Mon Jul 05, 2010 7:07 pm

I took off my DT Swiss wheels to put on my TT wheels. When we removed the cassette the free hub had been chewed into. Now I looked at the free hub and its been trashed. Google this problem and seems to be a known problem with DT Swiss 240 freehubs.

Check out the photo. What I am looking for is, I am sure that I can purchase the free hub separately, just want confirmation.

That freehub body looks nothing like the one in my DTSwiss 240 hubs.

Anyway, it's not trashed. The freehub mechanism still works, right? The only problem is the steel carrier on the cassette has chewed into the splines which are a softer alloy. You're producing too much torque.

Not sure off the top of my head if you can buy the freehub as a replacement. I could google it, but it's not my project. Ring the distributor, Dirt Works, on (02) 9679 8400, they'll sort you out with the good info.

You should be able to buy a replacement freehub, but given the price of these hubs and the reported distance covered (2,500km if I am right ?), it's pretty poor quality.

I have a similar issue on my $100 hubset (Miche Racing Box from Wiggle) that I used for my
handbuilt wheels, but I'm 94kg and have covered 2,700km, but the damage is not as severe.

I can get a replacement freehub for 30 pounds + shipping, so will live with it until it's a major issue, but my hubs are cheapies. The DT ones are not.

I'll be watching with interest to see the outcome.

Guys,

What you see there is very normal for a 8,9 or 10 speed compatible alloy free hub running a 10 Speed cassette. The splines on the 10 spd cassette are deeper which allows the cassette to move and chew into the softer alloy of the free hub.

I have seen pics and a write up on another forum of some small steel pieces which can be fitted when assembling the cassette onto the freehub and stops this from occuring. I believe they are made by American Classic, however the AC website wont work for me this morning. I will also ask the guy on the other forum for permission to post his pics here and let you know.

Cheers
Dave.

PS: The freehub on my Token wheels has done the same.

Dirt Works don't handle Cycleops anymore, as I was told I was told to ring Trek. I will have to find my paper work, I might be able to get this on warranty.

On another note.....my Gravity Zero wheels, rode them for the first time last Saturday in a TT, same thing is happening.

Ok I am confused...this isn't a Powertap hub?...why are you getting a Cycleops freehub body for a DT Swiss hub?.

It isn't a DT Swiss hub, it's a Cycleops free hub. I wasn't sure what sort of hub it was until today and doing some research and talking to Trek and Dirtworks. Then a Google search and I found replacement Cycleops hubs. It's built on a DT Swiss 1.2 wheel.

So DT Swiss hubs use Cycloeps free hubs as standard  ..well there you go.Knowing what Trek charge for Powertap parts in Oz I hope they don't sting you to much...either that or grab one from cyclepowermeters.com.

Not necessarily. The Red cassette have only 2 contact points - one at either end, and the inner end (the ironically red coloured plate) is not real thick either.

Also probably costs a lot more

I've got about 10,000km on my PT freehub and it doesn't have a mark on it - but it's the steel freehub, not the alloy.

Unless you are a daft weight-weenie, buy a steel hubs in preference to the alloy every time.

Spoke with Rick at Trek who handles all CycleOps inquiries. I was informed that it is a know problem because of the splines on the free body and the cassette. I have emailed them photos. Asked about if its covered under warranty. Not sure if it is. I guess they will get back to me once they have seen the photos. I think the kit from cassons would stop this from happening. I might order a kit myself.

Just got a call from Casson's.

They don't sell to the public, hence you have to order it through the LBS (and they get it from Casson's).

There is no RRP, but the guy said that you should expect to pay around the $25 mark for the kit of tabs.

So, time to visit the LBS. Just use the code AMCBCK

And Rob, this may mean that you won't have to bother with the replacing of the freehub.

Here is a pic of my freehub damage (Miche Racing Box - 2,500km old)

No. It's not a DT Swiss hub at all, just uses a DT Swiss Rim (and maybe spokes).

The rather than using pawls like the freehub pictured DT Swiss hubs use their "Star Ratchet" mechanism, where there are two cogs with ramps on the two adjacent faces.

All freehub bodies made of alloy and engineered as 9/10 speed compatible have these bite marks. All mine certainly do - the avatar is a Reynolds one. Once you get the cassette off (which usually requires tools) just file off the burrs and its fine to us. Its all part of the weightweenie mentality.
