Seems a few books I have read are wrong then...you being there and lived it and all.I would drop a note to William Fotheringham and let him know his biography on Tom Simpson is all wrong and the quotes from his team mates about how he would spend more on drugs in one hit than they nearly earned in a year.I know you as much as I know him...so could swing both ways.

No recent take on it here...pretty much exactly the opposite.A guy was refused permission to join our club and one of the reasons was he was seen taking asthma meds in a race!...these guys are even paranoid about caffeine tablets...anyway I am about to pump my back fill of corticoids so I can't really talk.

I was only letting you know personal experience.
A quote, from a book (Cycling is My Life, T.S. an original copy, was one of the first books I read, and still have)
and quotes from his team mates, maybe one thing, and the truth, another.
Some things that ring (for me) from what was said about Tommy Simpson, seem to ring true for me.

... he was seen to drink brandy during the early parts of the stage. In those years,
Tour organisers limited each rider to four bottles (bidons) of water, about two litres - the effects of dehydration being poorly understood.

Simpson’s defenders, his wife and some former teammates, claim that it was the race doctor’s fault that Simpson
died due to medical incompetence (he was wrongly given a drip at the end of previous stages)

Two of the Belgian soigneurs who looked after riders in the team, specifically Simpson -
soigneur means carer and a soigneur is akin to a second in boxing - locked themselves in their room,
got drunk and would not come out. They were named as Gus Naessens,
one of the highest paid soigneurs and a favourite of Simpson's

Then and after in my time, drugs in Belgium were easy to get, and many nationalities went there just for it.

There has been no official denial that the first dope tests for 15 days on the Tour de France
riders were at Marseilles. It was from there that Simpson set out on his last ride. He was not tested.

Even when there were tests, scandals were hushed up.
Testing was rare, and even up to my time, my only experience was at the World Championships.

Simpson did not deny taking them - nor was he asked - but said that a rider
who took drugs all the time might get to the top but he would not stay there

Which was exactly what I was saying, and it was the feeling, even in my time.

Lucien Aimar, himself caught for doping, said: "Simpson had taken, at most, 30mg [of amphetamine].
Had it not been for his anaemic state he wouldn't have died. What killed him wasn't the dope, nor Ventoux
even though it was so hot. The true guilt lay with medical science.
What pushed him into his coffin was the person who administered an intravenous drip,
the thing that made it possible for him to go on restarting [each day]."

So small amounts of amphetamine "he would spend more on drugs in one hit than they nearly earned in a year"
Do you think that rings true?
Anyway snide remarks like "you being there and lived it and all" are not needed, thanks. And yes I was there.

If you are going to quote me, then actually quote what I said...

And you would have to admit, that many here espouse immense knowledge,
on competative cycling that comes from a shallow pool.
A great example, here's one from today, from a prodigious poster of dubious repetoire...

Hardly. My level of riding is probably C grade, B if I try hard. But I don't race, so I'll never know.

My point was, that some here, prattle on, and their best effort, is an expensive bike, and a trip to the Cafe.

slugging away on a bike, many hours (up to 5-6, morning, and evening-track)
day after day, 6-7 a week, year after year, many years, for so long, for what.

I meet the "lovely" Yoko once...I also had a severe run in with her bouncer / security / 10ft gorilla ...he thought he got the upper hand...but I walked away in one piece with the exposed film in my pocket and he walked away with an un-shot roll ...the pics were great .

Got me invited to Europe, to travel and workout with the World Sprint Champion,
for 6 months, to sprint against him, in his leadup to his second Championship,
so the effort must have been worth something?
(met many great cycling champions, and had great times)

Floyd Landis completed the first stage of the three-day Tour of the Catskills.
Riding unattached but wearing the jersey of the Farm Team, Floyd seems
to be "digging some old dirt up", on Lance Armstrong and several other cyclists
and key figures in the sport.

Think you got a deal on your last bike? How about finding an XTR equipped BMC Fourstroke at a yardsale marked for 5 bucks? Hard to believe, yes, but it happened.

According to the Associated Press, Greg Estes of Owenton KY, picked up the bike for a measley $5 planning on reselling the bike for a coulple hundred and attempting to make a profit. Greg knew the bike was worth more than $5 even with two flat tires, but had no idea just how much. The bike was custom built by Cyco-Path Bicycles out of Temecula, Calif., near San Diego specifically for Floyd Landis to race in the 2007 Leadville 100. Obviously the bikes value is closer to $8,000 or roughly 1600 times what Estes paid for the BMC.

The strange part about the story is that Estes offered the seller of the bike a percentage of the profits if he is able to sell it, but the seller denied stating “finders-keepers.” Stranger still is that apparently the seller claims to have just “found” the bike on the side of a highway in Kentucky. So I suppose it could have been the result of bike rack failure, or the product of a new highway innitiative utilizing expensive bikes as mile markers.
Either way, Landis has not been able to be reached for comment while all of this comes on the heels of his broad doping allegations in the world of competitive road cycling.
