Date / Time:
3:10pm Saturday 07 November
Location:
Outside Bank Hotel, 324 King St, Newtown NSW 2042
Other info:
The hotel have excellent CCTV footage of the clown who stole it, and I'm asking the police to chase it up, but they're busy... who knows. Unfortunately I'm not allowed access to the footage / still image to put my own notices up. Apparently he's a local junkie; Caucasian, 30-40 yrs, with a beautiful new bright blue Giant Strata mountain bike, and is obviously a tosser
Incident # E 387 583 35
Contact:
Constable Francisco Eugeno
Newtown Police Station

Ph. 9550 8199
Happy cycling (*waaaaaaa*)

On a brighter note, welcome to BNA, shame it wasnt in better circumstance. Have linked a pic below for anyone who may see this scumbag on someone elses bike. If the police are suggesting the culprit is a known junkie, print out a pic of the bike from the web and take it to the local cash converters and pawnbrokers, chances are he will try to flog it off.

I guess on the flip side I'll know better next time (Fort Knox Bicycle security here I come - bring on the twin D-Locks)... and I've found a couple of excellent cycling forums now...

Bought this bike in the Waterloo neighbourhood, stop riding the next day, tried to fix it but lost interest after many attempts, so here you have it for a bit less than what I paid the local Waterloo guy

It has lockout suspension on that modelWestgarth wrote:Was the suspension 'jammed' before? Of course some genius might have changed the seat. Still, pretty good value for $60 with an optional $2 for delivery....

Thanks very much for your posts, and especially to Cobba who posted the first tip-off. After closer inspection I don't think the bike was mine... unless they'd gone to the trouble of removing my pannier rack. I didn't have a water holder either (though that's easy enough to attach).
Having said that, the guy who posted the ad never replied, and the ad was deleted right after I sent a request for him to call me. Gumtree won't give out details, and the cops didn't really care - I even went in personally to the station after I left a couple of voice messages. Sigh. The real rub is knowing that my beaut $1,000 and a bit bike is probably out there somewhere sold for $70! Arrrgh! Those poor spackker heads with a drug habit. So bloody awful.
Anyway, I have a nice new beast now, and have engraved it with my license and phone number. Got a kryptonite u-lock. Will also take a can of spray paint to the frame soon, to ugly it up a bit Am still uber paranoid though! And anyone I see locking their bike with a chain I approach gingerly and tell them they should get a better lock, hehe.
But I still remember mine and grimace... bugger! Hurrumph.
Thanks again tho'!

Glad to hear you go a new ride! You should do a search on youtube regarding the kryptonite lock . . .
cheers
Glenn

Just found these posts. I had a giant Strata stolen in Redfern in April. It was stolen without the seat. I currently cannot look up the Gumtree ad (as it has expired). I think this could have been my bike. If anyone knows anything please let me know.

I'm afraid I don't know anything else about the Gumtree ad, other than that it was posted twice and deleted both times. I wrote to the seller both times with no reply. I also wrote to Gumtree but I believe their policy is not to get involved unless you can prove someone is selling stolen goods. Which is hard to ascertain when you can't get in contact with the seller!
Good luck. Em

Bike was a Giant mountain bike with black fox shocks - had blue/black paint job. After-market handles that looked like metal/alloy. Think they were gold-ish colour. Had a plastic bag on the seat. Had some sort of carbon looking guard on the front.
Anyhow - I have the licence plate of his mate. So might be a lead.
