Occasionally I do wonder why...

Postby hartleymartin » Tue Jul 27, 2010 10:14 pm

We'd ever bother with some forms of public transport.

There is a particular place that I am thinking about moving to for the purposes of study. It is 11.4km from home. A commute by public transport would take well over 90 minutes (including the short walk to/from the train station) At a mere 7.6kph average speed I could beat public transport. My average trip speed tends to be around the 15 to 18kph mark. This means about a 45-50 minute trip on a good day commuting. A similar trip driving tends to be about 35 minutes (probably longer with the peak-hour traffic!)

Of course, if I lived on-campus then there would be no commute at all!

Hey Martin, you should try it out our way, the question is more, what is public transport?

My worst bus trip home from work took an hour. Of course it is only 25 minutes to ride home but I didn't have my bike that day

I lived on campus for 5 years. Lectures were 5 mins walk from my room.

I only had a bike, and would ride into town to do my food shopping every second day or so.

My wife refuses to live in an apartment, otherwise we'd live in one across the road from where I now work, a 5 minute walking commute. I would ride solely for enjoyment and own a car only for weekend jaunts out of the city; t'would be bliss... :D

If I drive 10 mins
Public transport - 30 - 40 minutes
Bike - 45 mins (if I went the way my wife thinks I go it's about 10 mins)

LOL! I had to admit taking a "long-cut" once when I got a flat tyre....

Went something like... "What took you so long?" A: "I got a flat..." Response "But it's only a 10 min walk away...." Me: "Ahhhh...... yeah... about that..."

Hi

I trained this morning from Fremantle to Joondalup, so door to door (walking at each end) took about the same time as my ride door to door. I know which is far more enjoyable and better for me.

I got a flat like that and then the replacement flatted soon after. I then had to walk somewhere that was on the way home before calling to say I needed a pickup. I'm still getting away with it but I think there is suspicion that I may be taking long cuts.
