Willunga isn't steep, just take it at a measured pace.

I don't know what the issue is... with IE6 (work laptop) & IE8 (home PC) the images don't load on the BikeSA site for this neither do those you provided. They appear OK in Firefox thoughyou cannot be sirrus wrote:It's on the web sitematth wrote:Does anyone know what the "Red Aware" jersey looks like... I reckon Crafers is tougher than Willunga. I did my first Willunga climb on my flatbar two months ago, filled with fear at what to expect, took e about 20 mins. It was hard work but a great feeling at the top. I've done it three times since, plus a couple of the other climbs that eventually lead to the top of the same hill. It get easier every time, especially when you know what to expect. Did it just under 15mins yesterday which I'm pleased with. It's a good hill and it gets easier towards the top, once you know that you can pace yourself better, just do it.Another newbie wrote:Did the 60 last year after owning my bike for about a month and a half. I'm thinking about doing the 100 this year. I did the Coast to coast in March and made it... just. So my question is - just how scary is Willunga Hill? How much training will I need for it and will the Crafers ride train me for it?

My Wife and I are newbies too. Started cycling in earnest with Amys Ride last year.We both found Willunga Hill to be easier than the climb up to Mt Lofty via the bike track.I agree you need to go your own pace .Checkers Hill in the TDU this year is a challenge you might want to try first/prepare for .I am not sure but I think Sheoak rd might go close I believe it has a similar 20% incline.Another newbie wrote:Did the 60 last year after owning my bike for about a month and a half. Anyhow its great fun.

Have a look in the Tdu 2011 thread for suggestions for training routes/climbs to prepare for Checkers. However, nothing beats actually riding it prior, so you KNOW what you are in for.
See you there

Yes. Checkers is a cow.
So walk it.
Along with hundreds of others.
There is no shame in failing to climb Checkers.
Fianancially, its an expensive week if you do both though.
