Q-Rings

I'm seriously thinking of spending some dosh on upgrading to a set of these so for those that have them what is your opinion and experience so I'm open for some help to kick me over and make the plunge. I have seen a link but stuffed if I can locate it or where I saw it but some smartarrs has done all the leg work and produced a CAD program that is free so you can make your own rings so has anyone got this link handy that knows what I'm talking about?

I've got a 44t Q-ring as my middle ring. I spend 95% of my rides in that ring so haven't sought the other two in the set. I do indeed like the Q-ring.

Thanks for the links Graeme did you make yours or is yours a purchased one? If purchased is it the Rotor brand or something else? Did you set yours up as per manual or did you end up changing the position for your own personal preference Graeme until you lost the dead spot and found a fluid stroke?

Mine is a bought one. I grabbed the program because I wanted to make a smaller chain ring than Rotor make but haven't gotten around to it yet.

I looked at the manual but ended up doing it by logic. I simply installed it so that when my leg was fully extended, the smallest axis of the ellipse was touching the point where the chain was feeding onto the ring. I haven't changed it since installing.

Once again thanks Graeme I know I will need a granny ring due to the hills around me so I have to either make two or purchase a set but as time is dear to me it may be a purchase job at this stage. Your installation method makes sense and I'm going to give that method my first choice so again thanks for the help.

I have 3 ring Q rotor MTB setup. I think it helps . (Not absolutely sure though). Put it this way , it doesn't make things worse. Not what you want to hear if you're going to fork out $$$$. But I'm going to keep using them. Also whatever rings you choose from rotor Q make sure they fit the spider of your cranks . Q ring make a variety e.g MTB /road / 3 ring /2 ring/ Shimano / Campy /compact / full size etc to suit different spiders/requirements . Fitting is easy . There are several ways of visualising how the ring should be installed. For me the narrowest part of the ring is at right angles to the top chain line.

Thanks fthills for the input and tips so at this stage I will be making a purchase due to time and they will be Rotor brand and on the Rotor web site they make it pretty clear to the different Q-Rings for the different spiders so no issue there. I'm going to get the complete set of triples and as this is my first investment into using Q-Rings I'm happy to blow my doe and if it fails no big deal but knowing Graeme is using them then that is all I need as a push. Maybe fthills take them off and place on your old chairings and then you will know for sure if the Q-Rings are having the effect they should have and place your own mind at ease. Still thanks for the feedback it all counts nothing like asking and getting the info from those who are using be it good or poor as I much prefer to hear from Joe Blow than some hyped up sport star or company spiel.

Thanks Graeme followed your advice on setting it up didn't even bother with the instructions and works a treat haven't changed or played around with it as it just feels great of the bat so thanks mate.

Are Q-rings substantially different to the old Shimano Biopace?

Yes. They are ellipses and they allow the user to set where the long axis sits relative to the crank axis. This last point is very important for recumbent riders, since the crank position of the dead spot is nearly horizontal on a 'bent, while it's nearly vertical on a common bike.
