Re: mount wellington ride this weekend ?
Hey mate Cheers for the offer but ive gotten into the habit of taking the mtb for a spin on sundays the last couple of months. I was thinking about checking out the Clarence mtb park or just the usual grinding up some ungodly steep firetrail Have a good ride, with the forecast for the week looking rancid!, tomorrow is the day
Re: mount wellington ride this weekend ?good ride marc,
up good, down bad Granton hurt after the mt when do we stop for coffee???
Re: mount wellington ride this weekend ?Barry, not surprised Granton hurt, wish I could have done it as well. Went for a ride Sunday on my MTB with my daughter on the back, up to the Springs (from my place). Now that was hard work... Bike + daughter = 40kg...

Re: mount wellington ride this weekend ?.....i think we need help when do we stop for coffee???
Re: mount wellington ride this weekend ?a little off topic.... what gearing are you folks using to climb the Mt?
hope to be in Hobart end of Jan 2012 and aim to try and get to the top.... lowest gearing I have is 42/28 which, I think, may be a real struggle for my level of fitness..... Just an ol' man, riding an ol' bike.... every hill feels like Alpe d'Heuz....
Re: mount wellington ride this weekend ?Depends on your fitness level. I lent a bike to a mate for the ride recently with 42-23 low gear and he made it up easily. I really struggle with a 39-28. It's not incredibly steep, just very loooong.
LG = Low Gear
Re: mount wellington ride this weekend ?
gears???? we use steel frame fixies not really, but i will check when do we stop for coffee???
Re: mount wellington ride this weekend ?
I'll be on a steel frame 80's road bike, 27" wheels, 5 or 6 speed freewheel, 52/42 crank.... hhmmmm... close to a fixie LG that is encouraging that your mate made it with 42/23.... I'll be giving it a red hot go no matter what, I don't care if it takes me all day to get up there.... Just an ol' man, riding an ol' bike.... every hill feels like Alpe d'Heuz....
Re: mount wellington ride this weekend ?
I've made it to the top on a ten-speed, 80's Repco roadie with standard gearing, despite my destinct lack of climbing ability... Wasn't fun though - I'd recommend borrowing or hiring something with a triple chainring or at least a compact for the day if you can. There are four phases of bicycle commuting; first there's fear, then rage, then self-righteousness and finally, fun.

Re: mount wellington ride this weekend ?I rode Wellington many times on my Repco Superlite, even did the Mt Wellington Challenge on it. The only bit that's hard going is between 800 and 1000 metres where the gradient is around 10%. Just pace yourself and you'll be fine.

Re: mount wellington ride this weekend ?No-one should ever be riding a triple unless its a MTB
try borrowing a compact 50/34 with a 11-27, thats all you need to comfortably get up there ![]()
Re: mount wellington ride this weekend ?
EVEN THEN IT IS A SIN. That is why SRAM release 2x10
