Magpie Watch

I don't want to give the magpies any satisfaction by dressing my helmet with any sort of adornment such as plastic ties, recently snapped off shrubbery or googly eyes.

I simply prefer to ride like 'da man' and resist any reaction to the claws and beaks snapping away.

I would have to agree with you on that one. It's similar to going after the shark which has just attacked someone in the water. They are only doing what's natural and so what if we get a little surprised by the buggers?

There's a nasty little magpie nesting in the tree outside my house. I get attacked even before I start riding, it's usually sat on the street light opposite so it get a good "run up" as it swoops in. I never get swooped at any other time, only when on the bike, I wonder if riding without the helmet for 50m would stop him, only problem with that is if it doesn't I've got next to no hair to protect me. Dilemna.

There are 4 of them on Sheoak Rd, at the back of Belair National Park. Two of them made contact with my helmet while I was doing about 35km/hr.

just when i thought magpie season was coming to an end i was absolutely molested by these 4 friendly chaps on sheoak road yesterday...

Been pleasantly surprised. Several rides up Belair Rd and Mt Lofty, and no swoops ..... Maybe they feel sorry for me ...

Top of One Tree Hill Rd/Seaview Rd intersection got hit hard unsuspectingly, just heard the impact, flurry of claws and feathers across the back of the lid and then a small sqwawk .Did not see where it went.Inspection of helmet afterwards shows ferocity of attack, nice little divot taken from the rear. Eyes to be installed.

I had problems last year with one on Churchill Rd North, Dry Creek and another on Yorke Tce, Salisbury.
....

Got attacked 8 times on Sunday on Churchill Rd North, both directions.

Been nailed several times heading out of Melrose (near showgrounds) in the past couple of weeks....
There's quite a few of them in the area... and they're toey!

just when you would think that the swooping season is over...I got swooped today going up Nortons, at the Teringie Drive intersection. The bugger swooped me twice on the way up and even had a go at me when I was doing 50Kph on the way down!

Ok i just got swopped today (YES IT'S STILL 1.5 MONTHS TILL SPRING!!)

My most feared magpie has begun as well (only me of course, I've seen no-one else become a target).

Last year he kept flying by the door of a caravan I was in, then when I was in a stable he flew in the door looking for me. His partner has also distracted me while he comes in from the side. Unfortunately the rural property (with the caravan and stables) that is in his territory is somewhere I go a few times a month... so it's not just I have to ride through his territory, but that I stay there. And he does NOT like that.

hit about 6 or 7 times in 50m around 11am on YP. was quite funny actually. could see his shadow on side of road so knew when he'd strike. hehe.
