Water bottles (and "duck-face"?) cause "smoker's lips"

Postby hartleymartin » Sun Sep 05, 2010 12:59 pm

It's a couple of years old now, but it's rather relevant to cyclists (considering we all drink from water bottles!)

Water Bottles Cause 'Smokers Lips'
By Samantha A. Torrence.

Women in their late twenties and early thirties have been going to doctors with concerns over wrinkles and lines forming around the sides of their mouths. What used to be caused by smoking can now be caused by water bottles. We have all heard to drink eight glasses of water a day, and if you are active sometimes more. Hydration is a key way to remain healthy, feel great, have an efficient metabolism and energy, and look younger. However the "drinking habit" has been doing just the opposite in the looks department for men and women who suck back water all day long from water bottles. Dr. Marylin Berzin has noticed that many women come to her dermatology clinic with what seems to be a usual complaint, the onset of "smokers lips." However upon interviewing her clients she discovers that they do not smoke at all, but drink from water bottles. Drinking from water bottles and sport bottles, even straws can cause the onset of smokers lips in as little as two years. The sucking action is similar to that of people smoking, but typically addicts to water bottles suck back H2O more often than a smoker will suck back a cigarette. Dr. Berzin cautions people to drink from cups or wide mouthed bottles so the top lip will stay relaxed. For those who cannot kick the habit, there is still a treatment for filling in those pesky wrinkles, just check with your dermatologist. Who knew drinking water could make you look older or unhealthy?
I had a chat about this with some friends, and we came to conclusion that this would be because women tend to purse their lips when drinking from a bottle, whilst most of my male friends open their mouth and use the bottle to pour the liquid into their mouths. It also had me thinking about this trend I see in a lot of girls to make this rather silly pout with their lips when posing for photos (it has become known as "duck-face" on the internet). You've all seen it at one time or another:

I must have led a sheltered life. I have no idea what this thread is about. That in itself amuses me.

I particularly like the little valve in the top that stops spillage when they're inverted. Love my Camelbak bottles. :D

Are they similar to DuraAce ones?...great till the mould sets in.
I have a trout face stalker... ...lucky I now live a zillion miles away that I don't need to deal with that anymore. It is very common in my profession  ...I have some really really good examples on my hard drive but I would get in too much trouble posting them.
Just wondering thou does anyone actually suck on their bottle?...I have always squeezed.

I have one of these and it really is the ducks nuts. I was sick of squeezing cheap bottles with push on lids that would come off and dumo the entire contents of my bottle on me, or throwing them in my gym bag and having the 'nozzle' leak everywhere. Definately no issues with mould yet. It was fairly pricey though (!$20). But for all the cheap bottles I've bought and ruined it seemed worth it.

But as you have demonstrated, you have low standards.
