I did a power test...

Postby goneriding » Mon Oct 11, 2010 11:52 am

....and learned a few things:
1. an hour is a long time.
2. static trainers really are boring even with a video running.
3. the test really hurt.
4. I can maintain a high heart rate for extended periods of time (170 for the bulk of the hour) without blowing up.
5. I am no longer "untrained" (as per the Coggan scale) for 5 and 20 minute power.
6. I have plenty of headroom to "grow" into with respect to power. :(
7. I have pretty good endurance.
8. I need to start putting some structure into my riding rather than just commuting and doing a weekend ride if I am going to start racing next year.

The test was a 25 minute, varied, warm up followed by an hour long test on a 2 degree gradient and was done using a Computrainer setup with all the whizz bang thingies and a machine that went bing!

I may have been a bit conservative during the test as it was the first time I'd had a go at it. That my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

Whatever your result.... an hour long test on a trainer is a pretty damn good effort!

The other thing I learned was that you sweat alot on a trainer even with a fan on. I got to the point where the sweat was running into my eyes and I had to close them to stop them stinging. I found that helped with zoning out to get through the test.

Wasn't just an hour, it was 85 minutes

Would be interesting to do - what was the cost ? (out of curiousity)

Now to see the next figures and huge power levels ....

@MichaelB - a friend of mine has a setup in his garage so the cost is just the pain I put myself through.

@JV911 - I am strong enough to draft most people :)

20 minute power was about 3 watts / kilo (FTP of 204 (AT) 68 kg's) which is the bottom end of Moderate on Coggan scale. Like I said, I've got lots of headroom.
