Track sprocket won't fit my chain.

Postby Mikka » Sat Oct 23, 2010 8:05 am

I'm lost. I've read all chains have a 1/2" pitch. But my track sprockets won't fit. The distance between the teeth is slightly greater on my rear cogs, so the chain skips. What am I missing?

If this is covered elsewhere, just point.

Are you using 3/32" chain on a 1/8" sprocket?

New sprockets, new chain. One 1/8" sprocket. One 3/32". Chain is 3/32" and won't fit either. Pitch between the teeth seems wrong. I'm doing something dumb, just not sure what.

You can't fit a 3/32" chain on a 1/8" sprocket, the sprocket will be too wide for the chain.

Don't some older chains and sprockets have a wider spacing as in gap in between teeth on the sprocket?

Or am I just !! BAN ME NOW FOR SWEARING !!?

Yes, some older bikes had 1" pitch, modern stuff is 1/2" pitch.

You won't find a bike shop stocking 1" pitch stuff this side of... I dunno, the 50s or something.

In any event, a 1/2" chain will still run on a 1" pitch sprocket. But that's not the issue for the OP.

It's not the width, it's the pitch. I was comparing and couldn't understand why the pitch was the same.

Thanks for your comments. I'll do some more searching.

What model chain is it? While you're at it, what model sprockets?
