Forum MTB Ride-Railway Reserve Midland to Mundaring and back

Postby rolandp » Wed Oct 20, 2010 2:13 am

Hi, there have been several posts on MTB, and if anyone would like to give this a go, then I suggest a Forum Ride on Sunday 31 October, starting at 8:00 at the Midland Train Station (train arrives at 7:55am).

If you haven't done this loop, then check out Railway Reserve.

It is following the old railway route through John Forrest, joining up to the Mundai Biddi trail down to Mundaring Weir Hotel for lunch/coffee, and then back down the Railway Reserve via Darlington etc.

Total distance is around 35-40Km, on loose gravel, with the exception of the Mundai Biddi section which is dirt, and some back-roads of Midland to get to the start.

If there are more experienced riders I can divert you through a firetrail in John Forrest which was shown to me last Sunday.

Please let me know if you are interested. I should have at least one spare MTB if you need to borrow one.

Would 700 x 38 Schwalbe marathon tyres see my Masi thru this?

Ballzamon, I did this with a mate a year ago with similar set-up, and he made it. Would recommend MTB tyres to ensure that you can get through the gravel and dirt, rather than having to push through the deeper parts.

PS just worked out that 31 October is Halloween (if you believe in this stuff). We could always ride through the tunnell to make add a 'scary' bit to the ride.

I'm interested, but need to clear it with the Director of Social Activities.

Cheers,

That day is no good for us. I'll be dropping of Mr Moo at the airport and then coming home to check my parents haven't stolen the dogs before they head home to Augusta!!

If this date falls through, we're up for the following weekend.

Compiling the list, as I originally suggest this ride for October 31 which is this Sunday:
rolandp - yes
Baalzamon - yes on masi - use the widest tyres you've got you will be able to do it, I'll be gentle on you
Kalgrm - obtaining leave pass
Moo and Mr Moo - no but interested if this was week after - can always take you guys the next week

Anyone else? If so, add your name to the list.

I'm in too.

Note the disruption to services on the train between Whitfords and Clarkson this weekend.

I've been doing an evening ride around the Railway loop every Thursday with a mate on the MTBs for the last month or so. ($5 pints & $15 curries Thurs nights at the Mt Helena pub - what's more is that they have Toohey's Old on tap - You Bewdy!!)

Was pleased to find that the sections through the JFNP that previously had that extra chunky granite blue metal have been graded over with finer stuff since last year. I think 38mm tyres should be OK, or at least a lot better than they might have been ;) I have seen a few heavier duty roadies (tourer/cx types) this season there too. 700c should roll well enough...

I don't find the tunnel as impressive at night with no daylight at either end to add to the midway disorientation. It's prettier taking the scenic bypass with a view to the Northwest over the coastal plain. Mind you, Halloween would be a good time as any to hide a plastic skeleton in one of the little hideaways like I've always wanted to.

Prior commitments for this Sunday, but I hope yous have fun :)

Just a note regarding tyres, I've done this ride on a Ricardo Viva with 27x1 1/4" road tyres. Got through fine though shook my teeth up a bit. Only had to walk through in one section.
Subsequent rides I've used a basic MTB with knobbies, much easier.

Another thing - dont use your lights in the tunnel, the challenge is to ride through with the tunnel exit beckoning.

This wouldn't be that clever if there happened to be an obstacle hiding in the dark...

I might be there depending on what the War Office is up to.

Well at night, you don't have any reference - so you keep bouncing off the walls, and when you do eventually come out - you don't know if it's the end you came in ;) Lights are recommended then.

Man, I'd love to do this, but I fear that working Saturday morning, sailing Saturday afternoon and going to a curry night on Staurday night will chew up my quota of brownie points this weekend :D

I think it's going to be too much hassle for me to rejij my bike for this. Tyres is the easy part, taking off mudguards front n rear, realigning rear brakes and repeat for when ride is done. My beast right now is a commuting/audax machine.

Good point!! I got a 2nd hand mtb for $500 - dual suspension (not that I'll ever really use it). Find a bargain before the weekend

Stuart, I can lend you my spare Giant Bolder for the event, I would have done 5,000km's on it, as this used to be my commuting bike at one time. It is a mid-range size, but from memory, you're not that taller than me so should be OK.

Long range weather forcast looks good for Sunday (Sunny top of 28) so should be good. Is anyone catching the train, if not, I'll suggest a start point closer to the track?

Let's make the start point here.

NearMap shows this as Miller St/Purton Place. The North section is then just up Miller St (the way we will go up to Mundaring), and the South section which we finish at will be here.

If anyone is catching the train, let me know and I'll pick you up from the train station.

My mobile number is 0418 910 700.

I meant I bought a 2nd hand mtb. Scotty has a friend (but they aren't really talking at the moment - more like eying each other off to see if one is a threat to the other!!).

You don't really need that car service... :)

What time are we starting from here?

This is a good start point for me :D
