By the time I got to the 2nd rest stop, I was kicking myself for not choosing the 100km - I was feeling great after completing Hahn Rd and Aldinga Rd.

....
Glad you enjoyed it. Last year, the drag up Hahn Rd was just that, as it was against a headwind :? This year was a welcome tailwind.

The last 45km were pretty tough (for me anyway) as it was windy and up & down. 2/3rds of the climbing was from 2nd rest stop onwards.

See ya next year !!

I agree, that wind was definately sent to test us. Loved the support we were given at the crest of Willunga Hill, big thanks to the kind sould who cheered us on for the last 100m of the hill. If I wasn't going to cause a traffic hazard I would have got off my bike and kissed that crown on the road. I felt really happy to have made it up - I was a Willunga virgin.

Great day - roll on january & the Ride like Crazy and TDU.

Still need much more practice though.
Lycra - It's a privilege not a right.

Saw someone with a flat on the Marion rd overpass
Did mine in about 4 hour 15 and was surprised how many people i passed on Willunga Hill (took me about 9 mins including the right turn up to Willunga Hill so probs 7 mins)
My first 100km too:D . I noticed that there was support cars this year and didn't see any last year(even though i did 60kkm last year)

Even though i roughly know what time slot im in i just cant be bothered looking for the photo :x

EDIT maybe not that time then sry

Not trying to start a war, but if it took 4:15 to do the 100, and you did Willunga Hill in 7 min, you were suffering Oxy debt more than you think    . Current fastest on Hillclimbr for Willunga Hill is 7:55 for an A grade racer which is an average of 22.7 km/hr.

I did the ride in 3:34, and the hill was done at an average of 12 - 13.5km/hr for me, which I was reasonably happy with.

Even 9 minutes is absolutely flying up Willunga Hill! (see http://www.sa.cycling.org.au/default.asp?Page=39319 - everyone around the 9 min mark is in A-grade).

Anyway, sounds like a good day out, hopefully I will get around to doing it next year!

17:27 for the 3.5km up Willunga Hill (see lap #15) http://connect.garmin.com/activity/55768860

12 km/h, thats my 2nd fastest time up there and I'm being deadly serious, only 1 person passed me on the whole climb, the rest were going backwards :D

Just curious, can anyone tell me how they time those time trials at the amateur level?

According to hillclimbr, Cadel's time was 7:08 in a breakaway effort in 2010 TDU.

I was about 16 - 17 mins and got passed by half a dozen people. Passed 3 times as many. I don't really care, i don't compare myself with anyone else.

Many people were doing Willunga for the first time. Well done to everyone who made it for their own King of the Mountain moment.

I don't reckon I could get DOWN Willunga in 9 minutes. i didn't time myself going up but looking at my Garmin plot I reckon it took me about 17mins which is normal for me. I paced myself fairly steadily following a mate and then kicked his arse in a sprint finish. (didn't tell him it was a race and took him by surprise).

My first climb of Willunga was four months ago and was hell, lots of huffing and puffing and nearly puking. I saw many riders in that state on Sunday and I felt for them, hats off to all who did it for the first time. We had a Willunga virgin in our group, it was great to see his face as he passed the KOM sign.

Now that i think about it i did it in about 11-12 mins as i certainly did it less that 15. I will try and see if i can narrow down the time frame using the photos from epsom rd studios
( i know it sounds like am an idiot now  )

Cycling SA is using transponders and is just like any other pro time trial or road race.

went out with two mates for one last spin on my roady lol.. ended up doing 99.6km on the day (reynella to start point, then turned off at bottom of wickhams to head back to the vale, i was dead by that point).

one hell of an experience!! the expressway climb amongst god knows how many people (an solo run down earlier in morning  ) was a real eye opener. As was a first timer's shot at willunga hill haha.. No idea on time, I know i was steady on about 12/13km most of the way up tho..

Was suprised to see how many people took it very easy down wickhams hill to be honest.. Mates & i came bombing down it haha, was nice to be able to use the entire width of that road!! (That said, knowing it well from a different past probably helps too..)

Much enjoyed & big thanks to BSA & all those who helped put it on!! :)

I was surprised at how many people took silly lines around the corners on Wickhams when they had all the road to use. saw many riders hugging the left hand shoulder as if they were expecting cars to come past. I had a ball using all of the road where necessary.

MichaelB wrote:Had a great day, but just missed out on my target time. Finished in 3:33 (but had to wait for one of my mates as he was struggling a bit after Willunga Hill), and was a bit spent.

No-one passed me going up Willunga, and managed to pass some very expensive bikes shod with deep section carbon rims, not bad for a fatty !!!

Made use of the free massage :D which made the ride back easier, but it wasn't quick.

147km for me on the day and 45 the day before for a week total of 267 !!

Again, hats off the BikeSA, as evereything was done brilliantly. Can't wait for next year.

Oh, and hats off to the Penny farthing riders and the 3 unicyclists (nutters !!!)

Saw no accidents, but plenty of flats, none of which were mine
not far from me there - I did it in 3 hours 39 minutes - great DAY
