Rather sick of the rain

Postby Jean » Mon Nov 15, 2010 10:35 am

I've had a terrible few months for getting on the bike (family things, sickness etc), and now that I'm in the clear to ride again it just keeps raining. The dams are full and the grass is long - it can stop now. It seems like I spent the whole winter cleaning my MTB (and my road bike for that matter) and it's all getting very tiresome.

It's only water.

And glass... :(

I think all this belongs in Missy's Sooking Thread.

Know what you mean, though. Got out for a trail ride with soem mates 7am Sunday morning. By the 8:30 finish I was well and truly over the heat, and the legs were letting me know they weren't happy after 2 weeks of no weekend traininag rides due to rain.

Be careful with what you wish for! Rode from Tuggies to Lake George on the weekend, 120km round trip, very hot and windy. I went through six bottles of water and still felt dehydrated that night.

Riding in South Australia earlier this weekend + last weekend. Most rain this season they've had in years. Red dirt turned to mud - the stickiest clay ever. it stuck to the wheels and coated everything. The wheels just grew and grew to the point they would no longer turn because the mud was a solid block from the tyres to fork, which stopped them rotating. Fun fun fun apart from the poor bugger with 2 broken derailleur hangers.

Have to say I was very glad to see a dry track on Sunday for the Triple Tri, push bike hill would have been hell in the mud.

Sure are now though. I was looking at water proof over shoes on the internet this morning, having just bought some new white Northwaves

Most of my roadie gear is white. Lucky I have some mtb gear as well. 28kms today as commute. fairly damp now. Drainage on paths is slightly less than adequate. 8)

Vets race cancelled tomorrow, both Cotter and Uriarra crossings closed so no way to reach the course. And the whole of Stromlo park is closed as well, according to the media release, hopefully they will let the crit circuit be used for Tuesday night or I am going to suffer withdrawal symptoms.

Bike is very second hand at the moment, chain has washed the grease out, rear derailleur has gone laggy when shifting in both directions.

We took advantage of the rainy weather this morning & rolled around Bunya (Brisbane) in the drizzle on the single speeds. Only saw one elderly gentleman walking twice for the entire 2hrs we were out. Come on people it's only water & the gravel trails are under no threat what so ever of damage in these conditions.

Forecast for Sunday is rain periods, so it looks like a 100km single speed road/ bike path ride to the bay is highly likely. I'll bet it's very quiet there as well which is a real pity in some ways, but eerily pleasant in others.
Gas propulsion.......it's natural don't fight it.

Now it's really getting ridiculous, lots of crazy photos on RiotACT and there are plenty of Road Closures.

Was planning on cruising up the bike path from Weston Creek toward Scrivner to check out the Molonglo in flow but guess I won't get far after seeing those photos which show water over the path. And can only assume it will increase if they open the 5th gate which NCA have said will likely happen this afternoon.

Twiz - there are back ways to at least have a look - or ride a MTB if you know where...

Cotter Road, Yarralumla Woolshed/Equestrian park - park at the woolshed and up and over the horse cross country course

Dunrossil Drive - near the GG's house - down the bikepath hill, under Lady Denman Drive and chuck a right...

Kirkpatrick street - down past the horse paddock on the corner to the path that goes along parallel to the river down to streeton drive.

But if you drown yourself, please don't blame me. :D

errr - sorry Haks    major mcfail! please accept my apologies and I'll fix any punctures you get for the next 6 months.... *slaps self in head*

i must've been looking at his post up a bit. I'll be there in about an hour and a half wallowing around doing photos. I wouldn't be riding over the wooden bridge below the dam now... Not with water lapping not far below it.

Watch out also for the bike path near Duntroon next to the river. I ignored the blockades last night thinking "it's probably just water over the path" and it turned into an episode of "When Bike Path's Attack!!"

The erosion from the river has caused major damage - parts of the path missing, and massive earthquake like cracks over a span of about 50 metres. It's buggered and will take considerable expense and time to fix - and worst of all has put paid to the popular "full lap of the lake" ride as there's no other way through.

Just got back, fun and games :). Will post some photos soon but needless to say Scrivner Dam was like a major shopping centre carpark on the Boxing Day Sales :P

BPM: See the today's ride thread for some photos and chat about the path near duntroon :)

I was out there today just after 4:30. Pretty fricking amazing. The debris in the lake was the most impressive bit.
