What is this modern fixie fascination with heavy wheels ???.
Back in my day I did some of my training on a lightweight frame fixed wheel with Fiamme Ergal rims and light tubulars - that thing REALLY rocketed.
And btw it had front and rear brakes because it needed them - with 88" gear back pedalling did not do much slowing especially when legs were burnt from doing a bunch of intervals.

1- No one much (that I know) rides 88 GI on the street.
2- Get a front brake
3- Level your seat

im not some track racer willing to blow hundreds on some carbon wheels i dont need......

Gear Inches = GI
Some folks say 48- 16 meaning chain ring teeth and sprocket teeth. Other say it in gear inches. 88 is f*cking HUGE!!!!!
It's a track ratio and not for riding a fixed gear bike in the city. Across the Nullabor maybe

It just depends on your needs. I run something in the range of 60-63gi for my singles, but that is because I puddle along, go over a few small hills and arrive at work without being a sweaty mess. Could I go higher? Heck yes, but if I realisticly top out at about 20km/h that's fine with me, no need to go faster

HAHAHA! You should see my latest dual-single. Have to stop, loosen quick release back wheel and move chain over to other chainring and cog, but man can I climb mountains now! Does it still count as single speed, or have I finally caught up with times and gotten gears? I'm not sure, but it is made from seven different bikes...enter Frankendingle. Still the 60/31gi is nice to have!

to be fair, i'm riding 52-16 on my el cheapo fixie build with full steel, which is 87.8 in gear inches

And fix that seat, my preference would be to replace it. If you have the cash get a nice leather saddle.

Not if you're riding it on the street. Skid 'braking' is so ineffective.. you're just asking to cleaned up by a car.

Brakeless should stay in the velodrome and there only. Besides, skid braking kills tires too quickly as well.

I know some of my friends ride brakeless along the Tram Tracks, safer but still unsafe without brakes.
