What does one do when you forget your locker key?

Postby rolandp » Tue Sep 28, 2010 11:57 pm

Happened to me today. Small emergency at work, and needed to get in early. In the confusion, forgot to pack the locker key, so wasn't able to get into my locker which includes work trousers, shoes, towel etc.

Walked around the office with a pair of shorts, cycling shoes and a work shirt.

I'll get a spare key cut tomorrow.

I leave a shirt, trousers, toilet bag and shoes in my locker. I figure no one would want that stuff so I don't lock it. I don't wear fancy clothes so it's not much of a risk and cheap to replace. In 2 years, nothing has gone missing :D

Happened to me a couple of months ago - I had to ride home and get it - rather be late than walk around the office all day wearing nicks  now I keep an old pair of trousers in a drawer at my desk just in case - guess I could also just not lock the locker...

I used to work over the road from a shopping mall, one day I got a lift home so didn't have my suit trousers at work and forgot to bring them the next day - just walked over the road and bought a pair of jeans.

I ask the nice people at Cycle2City to open it for me. I guess they use the same key for when they put my freshly ironed shirts back in there for me on the weekends.

I keep a pair of trousers and a 'backup' shirt in my locker, I take a fresh shirt every day I ride.

I have my locker key, usb dongle and others attached to my security pass, which I have to wear all the time at work.

When not wearing my pass, I keep it on a clip provided inside my pannier / briefcase.

If I forget my pass, I have a spare locker key in my desk drawer.

I did have to wear a mates spare pair of pants about 6 years ago, he was one size smaller than me.

I've loaned out my backup shirt once.

Beg nicely at security. LOL. They also have a spare and discourage us from copying the key. I have my locker key with my office keys so if I lose the set then all work related keys are gone. Makes things easier for our security folks to replace everything in one go.

You're at the bleeding edge of summer fashion. Saw a female wearing a belted tight canvas shorts with a pin-striped short-sleeved shirt and a nice pair of flat shoes. The combo looked good.

Hi

I normally leave a week's worth of clothes at work, but got in one morning and found I had no pants. Had to ride home and back again ... took a good 2.5 hours. If I leave my office key at home, FMO lend me a spare for the day.

Our bike lockers just have loops which will take a user-provided padlock. Works well, mainly because Property cut off any padlocks left on lockers across the Christmas shutdown. Most people leave one of the spare keys in their desk drawer.

Forgot my shirt a couple of times, hung around the mall until shops opened. Leaving the locker key at home would be a righteous pita.

What locker....
Packed my pannier bags lastnight and forgot shirt. Wouldn't have been an issue if I didn't have to go out onsite to see a customer

if your locker is near your workstation, just keep the key hidden at the workstation.

Done it. I actually had to push my hand past my trousers (in my locker) to reach my shoes and went shopping in all my lycra clad splendour.

After my shower tried to put on the jeans I just bought. Went back to my locker and realised I already had trousers so wore those

Returned the jeans at lunch time but kept the t-shirt and wore that with my trousers. Got told I looked like a rock star

Ahh, the joys of senility setting in.

my solution: have two lockers, keep spare keys in a drawer somewhere, carry your key attached to your id card (so part of the 'ball n chain' hanging around your neck). We have more lockers than cyclists so I pinged a spare one day, both have all that I need normally plus for that rainy day.

just4tehhalibut, where do you work? We used to have to wait until someone leaves before we can get a spare locker. Complained to building management who did an audit and discovered we have around 10 spare lockers out of 60, so now some spare, but I'm sure the word will get out and they will be taken up. However, would hate for someone to get two as they are as tiny and your lucky to fit spare clothes, towel, shoes etc in them, and there is not enough for all of us to have two.

What does one do when you forget your locker key?

Ride back home and call in sick. Helps when your locker/bikerack and workplace are at two different locations so no one has seen you come and go.

My locker key, access cards, office keys etc are all on one key ring and lanyard so normally I do not forget them but if I do I am totally screwed and so resort to the above remedy.

Ditto.

Worst thing about the facilities at my current work is that the showers and lockers are in the basement with the aircon condensers and no ventilation. Even in midwinter when it's -5 outside, the basement is like a sauna. I've found it's actually better to shower before the ride, grab my clothes and get changed in the toilets on the floor my desk is on than try to shower at work - end up more sweaty than when I arrived. :|

Getting a little OT but... I got a check done on who had signed for lockers, found half had left the building a while ago, some left employment. One guy had just been using the locker to store old stereo equipment when he cleared his desk out, never came back to collect. If I'd asked 18 months before I could have had his locker way back. Got a few other spare lockers that way, got a few people happy. Worth asking sometimes.

P.S just found out, carrying your keys on a carabiner is not good. Unless it is a locking carabiner and all sticky taped up just to be sure, something I'll do next time, after I get new keys cut.

Our security people gave us a grilling first before they'd give us a bike locker ie if you'll use it every day etc. The keypad access also allows them to monitor our "movements" ie if we're using the bike facility every day as we said we would. The good thing though is the head security is a bike fanatic so he understands the needs of us commuters :-)
