which bearing grease
Postby s-s-a » Mon Dec 10, 2007 8:43 am
Anyone want to recommend a grease to use for repacking bearings? Nothing too flash - it's for the kiddy bike rebuild I'm doing.

Yes, I switched to a marine grease [Shell Nautilus or Castrol Boating grease] since the label says it's good for wheel bearings & it [apparently] won't emulsify with water like regular grease will. The white lithium based bike grease tends to dry out & set like dried mud after a while.

Castrol HTB works for me. Buying a 10cc syringe from the chemist gets you a pretty handy grease gun.

I use a Pennzoil equivalent of HTB, but if you're going to buy from scratch I'd go the waterproof variety and get the Castrol Boat Grease as suggested above. Given that it has to perform in a highly corrosive salt environment while having water blasted at it at all sorts of ridiculous speeds and still let the bearing spin freely, it looks like a winner to me.
