Traffic-free climb recommendations

Postby arkle » Thu Jul 29, 2010 8:23 pm

Hey up,

Anyone know any good climbs that aren't plagued by heavy traffic?

I know about the old freeway/Eagle On The Hill climb but what others are there?

The climb from Blackwood to Crafers would be good but it's far too busy with cars. The same with Greenhill Road.

Noticed that you are in Bridgy so will give you a couple of my favourites that are close by and not too busy .....

- The climb from Callington up to Nairne is a good un
- From Balhannah back up Greenhill road to Uraidla will get the heart pumping
- Mylor up to Longwood via Stock road

Hope this helps

Thanks!! I ride Balhannah to Mt Lofty Summit most weekends so I'm familiar with that one.. forgotten about Mylor to Warrawong though - that's an evil climb!

And I'll try the Nairne one!

Norton summit rd is pretty much a bike path.......all the cars take the old road.

I'd agree with Ntn Summit and EoH as being best options in the metro area.

Other thing is to pick your time when you go.

Gorge Rd isn't too bad either - as there are lots of bikes, MOST of the traffic is pretty good.

Waterfall Gully Road either from Greenhill or Glynburn Road, either way its steady climb not too steep.

not really a hill though, is it?

Anybody been up there in the last year? Is the road surface still appalling? There have been accidents aplenty and at least one fatality amongst cyclists due to the road surface?

Incidentally, a cyclist died on Old Norton Summit Rd this morning - no details yet. First reports suggest a singular accident (ie no cars involved)

Yep. You wouldn't catch me riding up there in a fit. Too many cars, crap road surface, and no room.

Heard that through another guy at work  Was up there last Sunday at night.

News article re cyclist death Appears to be from a heart attack rather than accident

I'm down south so I find the old Willunga hill a great climb, Inow it's not exactly close to most but it really is a nice climb with plent of car free roads around that area.

How has no-one suggested the veloway? Ride from Darlington to willunga without touching a road, and the first 3k is a half decent little climb

The trouble I find is that there are a few hills around, but the majority of them are pretty short. (exception being tollgate-Mt Lofty). What would be your fav long challenging (safe) climb?

As stated earlier Norton Summit is almost traffic free, Down south Wickhams Hill is pretty quiet and I find most drivers on Willunga Hill are very obliging to cyclists, but I guess it only takes one bad one to spoil the day.

There's not really that many long climbs in Adelaide. There's Greenhill Rd but that is usually busy with traffic. Perhaps try doing the Corkscrew then continue on to Marble Hill up Montacute Rd.

Greenhill Rd is the longest 'constant' climb that I am aware of close to Adelaide. At only 7.3km from the Roundabout to the bus stop, it ain't long. If you drag it from the intersection of Fullarton/Greenhill to Mt Lofty lookout, it's almost double the length, but then the climbing is much reduced.

Pick your times to ride them is the best bet. That's what I do.

correct there are not many long climbs, the only way to get a lot of climbing in is to link a bunch of the smaller ones up
if i get killed while out on my bike i dont want a 'memorial ride' by random punters i have never met.

Both Norton Summit and Old Norton Summit Road are basically car-less. There are a few on Old Norton Summit Road but Norton Summit Road is great. 7km climb rarely a car insight. Especially on the decents there are rarely any cars so you don't have to worry about cars coming past you.
