Cyclist fighting for life - Gwelup

Postby rolandp » Sun Dec 19, 2010 3:36 pm

From The West:
A cyclist is fighting for his life in hospital after being found on the road in Gwelup with serious head and facial injuries

Paramedics were called to the junction of North Beach Road and Mews Entrance about 9.30pm last night.

Police said it appeared the 37-year-old Karrinyup man was thrown from his bicycle after hitting a concrete barrier at the junction.

It is believed he had been riding his Melvin XTC300 along North Beach Road.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash and are investigating whether another vehicle or person was involved.

It is believed a passerby found him on the road.

The 37-year-old is in Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in a critical condition.

Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

...and another one.

If a motorist were involved, really there should be calls for a murder charge.

Sad news

From Perthnow

A 37-YEAR-OLD cyclist who fell off his bike on Erindale Rd in Gwelup on Saturday night has died. He was not wearing a helmet.

The man had been in intensive care at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital suffering serious head injuries but died overnight.

Police spokeswoman Ros Weatherall said the cyclist, who was riding a black and grey Malvern Star XT3000 mountain with no lights, was not wearing a helmet. His name has yet to be released.

"It appears that the deceased has lost control of his bike, hit a concrete bollard, flipped over the bike, and landed head first on the road, with his bike coming to rest behind him, entangled in his legs,'' Ms Weatherall told PerthNow.

The concrete bollard he hit was part of a group being used to close off the entrance to Mews Entrance, from Erindale Road.''

St John Ambulance officers were called to the junction of North Beach Rd and Mews Entrance by a passerby about 9.30pm where they found the man unconscious next to a bike.

"Our aim is to identify any witnesses that may have seen the deceased cycling on the road or footpath prior to him falling off, or may have seen him actually falling off the bike,'' Ms Weatherall said.

The Crime Stoppers number is 1800 333 000.

Hi

Mews Entrance shows up on Nearmap.com. You can see the concrete blocks blocking the road.

I visited the location yesterday:

The concrete barriers don't need to be there, they could have been located 10+ meters away from the junction as they are preventing access to the newly developed estate. They do not need to be sticking out like they currently do.

Had a call from Dad earlier today. He asks, did you hear about the cyclist killed on the week-end - Yes, do you remember friend of family - Yes - penny drops - don't tell me it was him - Yes.

His father has volunteered at least twice for the 'Great Bike Ride' down South - around the kitchen and setting up.

My personal views -
A helmet may have saved his life
A cycle light may have saved his life
Those concrete blocks located on that intersection did not save his life - they should not be there

A tragic festive season for some. And it will likely haunt at that time for many years to come. Condolences.

(I have removed my earlier comment on barrier issues to a separate thread at http://www.bicycles.net.au/forums/viewt ... 50#p522850 in the (vain) intent of keeping this one on topic.)

That rider Andrew was a father of his first born ~9 month old boy at the time who was in the same mothers group as my first born, and happened to be a neighbour two streets away.
I met him at an infant/toddler first aid course the mother's group had organised at one of the mum's houses where a paramedic came in to train with focus on baby resuscitation and choking etc.
He was a lovely guy, and I felt a very sad loss for his wife and child when I heard the news.
My wife told me there were over 200 people at his funeral that really overwhelmed her, lots of love and loss in the eulogies.
The one snippet she remembered from his Mum brought her to tears then and still does for me now thinking of it.
