Just to give you an idea of what the water has been like, a friend of mine lives near Toowoomba. He said that there was a 7 metre wall of water washing through. He also said to me that the Brisbane dam was at 160% of its capacity. That is why there was more flooding in Brisbane. They apparently had the choice of releasing some water and risking a small amount of flooding or have the dam wall possibly break.

I struggle to conceive exactly how much water they are receiving. He said they got something like 100mm in an hour.

There was a guy here in Sydney some time ago that suggested that we could help solve some of the countries water problems (drought) by putting a pipe line next to every railway line in the country with the ability to pump water to anywhere in the country. I know that wouldn't have stopped what has happened but it might have given the authorities some way of draining at least some water away.

All, while still a bit damp in Rocky, thoughts go out to those affected by what's happening around Bris, Ipswich, Toowoomba, Caloundra and places in between.....bugger it, all the South East!

I've a few trips to brisbane in the upcoming months (next week) and was planning to bring my bike down for another River Loop, but think it'll be prudent to pass next week due to the damage that peoples homes will suffer. Be too hard to ride past with any vigour i think.

The plan by this guy was to have piping across the entire country, next to every single railway line. This would enable water in events such as this to be distributed to anywhere in the country, perhaps right now they could have piped it to WA or the Murray River where they are apparently short of water and they would not even have to buy the land to lay the pipe on because the governments already own it.

I'm trying to imagine the size of pipe needed to drain away the equivalent volume of Sydney Harbour every 2 days... (which was the estimated amount of additional water causing the floods)

Being able to move fresh / clean water into areas affected would be useful however - assuming the pipes aren't washed away along with the rail lines...

Hi Mick, unfortunately the RiverLoop as we know it will probably be unsuitable for months.
There will be huge damage to roads along this route even after the immediate cleanup process reduces.

On a separate note, news is that the Citycat passenger transport system is destroyed and will take months or years to get fully operational again.

My house did not flood here - but my garage and office did. Everyone in my family is ok and the dog just sat on her bed and could not understand what the fuss was about.

It probably has gone nowhere due to the massive expense of the project. Currently it costs approximately $10000 (10 thousand dollars) per metre to design, construct and test a new water rising main. This does not include maintenance. The national rail network (ARTC) only owns 13000kms of the networks, the others are privately owned like the darwin to adelaide, anything north of brisbane and anything north of perth. Even missing those links the bill is approx $130billion. The costs would blow out on needing to rent the other spaces.

Then there is the safety aspect of throwing a pressurised pipe next to a railway. If it was to be put underground then you might as well triple the cost if it were to work in the constrained spaces of the rail corridor. Throwing pipes under the track ballast is not a good idea!

It is a nice concept and if it were to get up and running it would keep a lot of engineering & construction companies happy!

Not that big, probably 1-1.5m diameter (huge in water pipelines though). The pumps though would be massive! Think the size of a mcmansion! The draining would have started well before the water had time to collect so disaster would have been potentially avoided (as long as the pipe intakes are in the right spot)

Thanks. I'm not after any awards, all i want to do is my bit to help out. Anyone on here that has been affected by the floods and needs assistance after the waters please let me know as I have a ute and can take stuff to the tip for you and help clean your houses.

It does look like I have done the biggest thing of my life by helping a family out. Friends of ours took in a couple whom came back from holidays up north only to find out that they could not get back to Toowoomba due to the floods. they have not seen their children for over a week and provisions up there short. I put word out on another forum to find out how I could get some stuff up there for them, i got an answer from a pilot who has allowed me to hire his aircraft ($500 to cover fuel) and go and pick up their children and bring them back so they can be together. They are better of down here than up there. This man I believe should be nominated for australian of the year for giving up his time helping out strangers. I also get to go on the flight so when this happens (which should be today) I will be taking my camera as this is an event that needs to be documented as much as possible.

It sucks hearing that Toowoomba is being advised to boil their water AND add Chlorine in order to make it drinkable.
Ive got a truckload of water for you folks and just no way of getting it to you
