I squash toads

Postby Comedian » Thu Jan 13, 2011 9:53 am

Riding home from work last night I got 8 toads.. that was a 50% strike rate. Am I alone in this activity?

If / when I see one in Sydney, I'm sure I will do the same.

I can assure you that SKS chromoplastics keep toad entrails off the frame

So am I alone in this? I couldn't believe my luck last night.

When I lived in Byron Bay, my house mate had a bull terrier that used to lick the cane toads and trip out.

"Howwwwllll....."

"Oh, Kaiser's stoned again."

I did find what I thought was a cane toad one night at Glenbrook, which is well outside their distribution. I didn't kill it because I wasn't sure if it was a Giant Burrowing Frog:

http://frogs.org.au/frogs/species/Helei ... traliacus/

I alerted the park rangers who keep an eye on the water bodies for cane toad spawn, which is unique because the spawn is in strings and the tadpoles swim in shoals.

If it was a cane toad, it was probably just a one off that travalled down with some tourists.

Those blighters will be breeding like crazy with all this water here....nothing that a tennis racket and a cricket bat won't take care of

Toads are like snakes - a simple run over does not usually maim them.
You need to hit the front brake hard momentarily as you go over the toad to cause mortal damage...just watch out for internal fluids splatting you and the bike.

Reminds me of a scene from that doco Cane Toads.

Picture this orange Kombi heading up the highway in the shimmering heat haze directlly towards teh camera, as the guy starts telling about how they'd be all over the road ... and the Kombi suddenly starts swerving to the sound of audible pops as he describes the sound they made.

Ok this is not cycling but in the rain at Xmas we ran over a toad (on purpose) in my brothers jeep. It felt like we hit a brick! So we went around again to see the biggest (squashed) toad i have ever seen.

there's a whole bunch out on one of my routes home from work, I normally don't worry about them too much, but last night & tonight I remembered this thread and had a go. Hit about half a dozen last night - but I'm not sure if I definitively squashed many of them.

Tonight I tried this - much bigger bump going over them. Just don't be a dumbarse like me and do this as you swerve at one to hit it, did (what felt like) a huge front wheel skid across the toad and almost ate crap. I got the bugger though - he ended up in my rear derailleur. Is toad blood a better or worse chain lube than WD40?

Not squashing them, but killing them off around the house by squirting them with a shot of Dettol...sends them hopping around like mad for a few moments then kicks in and knocks them off...we should have some evidence of the dettol's effectiveness in the morning

My wife was "on safari" with the dettol gun mid last week. Somehow she shot herself in the eye with neat dettol. (I've got to get the sights checked)
We now know why toads curl up and die.

Itled to a trip to the doctor and eye drops 4 times a day for a week and it's still red. At least the eye is Ok and not pussy any more and the doctor reckons there won't be any permanent damage.
