Amber Halliday suffers head injuries in cycling accident

Postby Drunkmonkey » Tue Jan 18, 2011 11:18 am

A very nasty accident from last nights racing - lets hope Amber has a speedy recovery.

AUSTRALIAN cycling champion Amber Halliday remains in a serious condition in hospital with head injuries.

Halliday remains sedated and under observation in hospital after falling heavily at about 8.40pm while competing last night in the Rendition Homes Cycling SA Women's Cup criterium event at Victoria Park.

About 15 minutes into the 50 minute race, it is believed Halliday clipped the wheel of another rider in the second round. She fell, hitting her head and losing consciousness at the scene.

Paramedics treated Halliday at the scene before she was taken to the RAH.

CyclingSA executive manager Max Stevens said it would be several hours before there was any definite indication of her condition.

"Any time it's head or facial injuries there is concern," he said. "We all need to appreciate that it only happened 12 hours ago and we need to go 24 hours before we get a real indication.

"It was a simple accident that has had bad results for Amber, but if anyone can get through this with hope, courage and determination, it's Amber".

Further updates are expected to be released later in the day.

The former rower turned to cycling after the 2008 Olympics and became the 2010 national time trial champion.

Amber tweeted this just before the race:
GETTING ready to race again. Short 30min race yest was very aggressive. 50mins tonight will probably be equally so
Gotta love the idiot comments asking if she was wearing a helmet

Damn. :(

Heal quickly and well, strength to your family.

Seems like Amber is strating recovery, but suffering from "post-traumatic amnesia following her near-fatal fall", but it is part of the package with serious head trauma.

Doing well so far is a good sign

Apparently had her concerns about the course pre race....

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/ ... 5990731499

She was also reported to be reconsidering her future in Cycling....

Either way I hope she makes a full recovery and is able to compete again at the top level of whichever sport she chooses.

I hope she recovers fully, as it was a terrible accident to watch...

I have about 40 frames (pictures) taken of the accident ( which will never be published )...

What troubles me is the fact my call for an ambulance took 8 mins to action by the first aid people, as it was clear from the second it happened it would be more than a band aid could fix....

Pretty disgusted that a photographer went up 20 mins later taking shots of her unconscious on the strecher....

He knows who he is....

Amber is getting better, albeit very slowly. There was a big article in the paper on the weekend, and also on CN

Amber recovering

The recovery phase echoes much of the experience/recovery that Richard Hammond went through (just finished his book), and it's a long and arduous road ahead.

Glad to see that she is recovering well. Best wishes

Don't think I had a handle on just how serious her injuries were until I read that.
