4 laps - thats 4000m of climbing, good luck with that
most of the 100km enduros here in NSW have approx 2200-2700m of climbing and they hurt enough.
Better get in them hills

I've been thinking of what a sensible avg speed would be the last few days, and I still have no idea :?

i would be happy just to finish with those hills
it depends on the terrain though, if its technical then this will slow you down considerably, if its open firetrail then you should be able to keep up a good average speed

Its the aptly named Foxy 1000

Got a good while for training but how I'm going to go about it, I've no idea. :?
The solo winner last year did it in 6:45.

I think you are going about it the right way...nothing more is needed at the mo than lots of long easy-ish rides.September is a long time off so I would be setting goals much closer at the moment. You need too plan roughly what else you want to do to stay motivated...most of your training will be on the road so if the winner last year took nearly 7 hours, you will have to plan a few really long road rides much closer but not too close to the event.I wouldn't be doing anything specific till July.

Pick yourself up a copy of "The Mountain Biker's Training Bible" by Joe Friel. The focus is on fitness training, rather than bike skills.

I've not been using any of his training programs, as I'm nowhere fast enough to consider racing, but his advice on avoiding overtraining with the consequent fatigue, illness and burnout has been valuable for keeping me on the bike and able to perform at work and home.

Hope this is useful. :)

Cheers,

Going to start doing more shorter faster rides from now on as the season starts in March and races are usually around the 1:30 time. I'll try to keep the odd long ride with this event in mind. MTB fitness needs working on though, after a couple of hours off road my body hurts! :)

Thanks for the book tip I'll get me a copy and have a good read. Done a search and hes got a few books that look worth reading.

Had this event today and can happily say I've seen enough fire road climbs for a while

Started about 8.30 this morning with showers and wind gusts and had bit of an eventful race  Crashed into a hedge 1/4 of the way round the 1st lap, then shortly after that, got a jump on a downhill section totally wrong which kicked me over the bars, landing on my right knee which flipped me over onto my head  Not how you want to start a race. Gears then decided to start playing around and the chain jumped over the cassette into the spokes about 4 times till I decided to fix it, v frustrating when everything was working well when checked yesterday.

It was a 4 lap race, each lap 25kms long with 1000 meters of climbing. Not been able to do anywhere as much training as I liked but the race went pretty well. Actually enjoyed the first 2 laps despite things going wrong and was feeling in great shape, then I eat an energy bar at the start of the 3rd which gave me some v bad cramps and slowed me down quite a bit. Felt a lot better though in the 4th and speed picked back up. Ended up finishing in 3rd place with a time of about 7.38 Avg of 13km/hr which I was pleased with for 4000m climbing and riding like a moron in the 1st lap :)

Good work Dean.

Want to give your sponsors a plug? Got any podium photos to share?

Cheers,
Graeme
