Gateway Bridge?

Postby notwal » Sun Feb 27, 2011 12:53 pm

I thought I read somewhere that bikes were allowed on the Gateway.
I was down there this morning and at every entry I saw the usual fascist signs that say "No pedestrians, agricultural machinery, mopeds, skateboards, no jumpers, no wheeling baby brothers in prams and NO F'ING BICYCLES".

SO what's the go. Will they have bicycle access on that new structure that's going up beside the Gateway?

There is a shared bike & pedestrian lane (completely separated from the car lanes) on the seaward side of the new Gateway Bridge. I think they're still finishing some of the access paths, but it isn't too hard to get to. It's well worth a trundle up & over it. I think I read that the slope is around 5-6%. Being a shared path they've asked that we keep the speed down, and there was talk they'd be enforcing it.

I rode over it the other week and thought that access isn't too bad. Use Lyttleton road from the southside to gain access to the shared path on the new bridge and once over on the northside there is a path that connects you to cycle over to the Kedron Brook Bikepath without having to use Kingsford Smith Drive...look for the Moreton Bay Cyclepath (MBC) signs.

nah, rarely see anyone at all on the bridge. It's not all that fun going down though - dead straight, a bit boring really. Easy to get your speed up though I guess.

I found the access to be fine. I managed to get up on a Mountain Bike. It was hard work but I got up there.

What's the best way to get to the Gateway Bridge from the Kedron Brook bikeway these days after all the work they've done in the area? Is there still the need to ride down Nudgee Rd and Kingsford Smith Drive? Cheers

From the Nundah criterium track ride up the Jim Soorley bike way to Nudgee Road where it crosses Schulz Canal. There are on/off ramps for bikes and a new bike lane over the canal. Once on the other side of Schulz Canal, swing back under Nudgee Road and follow the new bike path under the sky rail to DFO/Sky Gate. From Sky Gate, ride along Lakeside road to Lomandra Drive. Follow Lomandra Drive to the round about and swing on to Sugarmill road and ride down to Kingsford Smith Drive. Cross Kingsford Smith Drive diagonally over to Holt Street. Down Holt street, turn right on to Lavarack Avenue and ride down to the Gateway on ramp.

Thanks for that. So I'm guessing the only other alternative is down Nudgee Rd and left onto Lamington Ave?

You can head down Zillman to Lancaster left into Nudgee right into Lamington

I find that way the easiest and most straight forward. Fastest too.
