For audio... if you're capable...
Open it up, find the microphone & drill a hole through the casing where the Mic is.
Then cover it with sticky tape.

That should let the sound in but keep water out.

I got the DVS550, it's got the same resolution sensor as the 1080p contour. The 720p contour is blurry as hell next to it. Overpriced POS.

I have bought a Contour HD which takes great quality video. So long as it's mounted the correct way up.
It came in useful yesterday on the DHBC slowies ride. The link is here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ggFFZSjWFU
or search youtube for AF89AG
. Video has been shown to he police and moron will receive tickets for around $600

He'll get done for the horn, the unsafe lane change, and the overtake against doubles one would imagine.

What I find amusing about this, is that the source of the problem is the parked cars, not the bunch. It is of course perfectly alright to block a lane on an important road indefinitely with your unattended car, but for a bicycle to move through the remaining space at half traffic speed is apparently a dire insult against humanity.

Humans are so funny, we can sit in traffic for 1 hour, but doing 25 in a 45 zone for 5 mins drives some of us ballistic. Crazy.

This guy also needs to be given a bike and a helmet and spend 30mins on Parramatta rd. $600 fines is just going to deepen his hatred.

For a few incidents i can see camera's being useful, they seem to work well in diffusing immediate aggression in groups. I get an uneasy feeling that longer time they are going to create more problems than they solve.

Long term mediation. Police need to send these guys to RTA to do half day in Bicycle Awareness. Akin to what some drink drivers have to do.

He is getting done for unsafe lane change and crossing the doubles which he crossed after being told that he was on camera. If he is difficult he will get done for the horn as well.
Police also discussed driving in the manner dangerous but were doubtful as to whether it would stand up in court.
I think he is going to get a good talking to from the police.
Without the camera he would have gotten away free and this might make him think a bit next time he sees a bunch. He will be on record for this behaviour so any more would weigh very heavily against him if he did anything again to another cyclist

That is so sickening. How the hell can people act like that?

As for the other idiots that like to play chicken with us, I think they should lose the use of any vehicle for 3 months and have to ride a bike. Then they might understand.

That's got be one of the most nasty road rage by motorist against cyclists I've seen (similar to that Mexico incident where a car deliberately plowed into a racing peloton).

My observations are,
1) Why were the cyclists riding en-mass there?
2) Why were the cyclists riding slow and taking both lanes in what looked to be a busy city?
3) I note few riders wore helmet and at least two KO'ed riders on the ground were both helmetless.

Anyone know the background story?

The caption at the beginning of the video says "Critical Mass Tragedy 25.02.2011"

so I'm guessing this is a Critical Mass ride, all the cars behind were held up as the riders took all lanes.

Seems from the video the driver basically went crazy and decided to plough through from the back straight into the cyclists.

If it's a Critical Mass ride, did they have signs stating the nature of their ride? Or did it come across as a random disorganized bunch of riders hogging the road? The police escort for our local CM rides really make sense in this context. Keeping motorists off as well as keeping the demonstrating cyclists within bound.

It was an organised critical mass - but they do it a lot more frequently there - I believe that ride might have been monthly.

South American countries have poor driving safety in general (Brazil generally returns 3-4x our fatality rate per head of population), which is probably part of what prompts the riders to take critical mass more seriously.

Organized as in the riders know? Our local system makes much more sense. When it's organized, there's police presence and then motorists know it too.

I agree that there are some crazy driving situations in the Americas. When compared to gang killings, this kind of action would have been trivial for a drug gang member who was late to his next hit or deal.

From what I read the authorities were aware of the ride, but escorts weren't requested.

it says the driver has been identified but in keeping with the extreme cowardice of his actions, he's now in hiding. he'll find that a bit more challenging in the prison showers.

geoffs - can I ask why the bunch was riding so slowly and strung out in what appeared to be the middle of the road?

I love my riding but a strung out bunch like that meandering along would have irritated me too whether I was in the car or on my bike - possibly not to the point where I reacted like that ***********

Not wanting to get attacked but I think there needs to be respect both ways on the road here - he does deserve to get done but we can help ourselves a bit too.

Just my probably unwelcome two cents worth....

C'mon, you've been around long enough. Stop playing dumb about Critical Mass :P

In case you are really so out of touch:

1. CM does not have warning signs :? , it is not a protest rally.
2. Yes CM is a "random disorganized bunch of riders " - generally referring to it as a 'disorganisation' or 'organised coincidence'. The only organisation is a regular time and place to meet to ride. There are reasons for this, any formal organisation would lead to official action against such organisers.
3. Police escorts are unwanted and generally irrelevant to CM. The local authorities may feel the need but CM exists on its own undertaking.

Hi Steve,
all the cyclists were riding in the right hand lane as the left hand lane has parked cars. The ride has quiet a few beginner riders who have zero bunch skills. I do agree the bunch has to be tighter however it only takes a moment for gaps to appear. There will be a discussion regarding this before the next rider and the instructions will be firmer. The ride goes hough there at 6:50 am when there isn't much traffic around. We do try to let any vehicles that were behind us on edgeware rd go through before we move into the right hand lane
