Thanks Brentono!

MDCC is the midland cycle club..& they have wed night sess's (AT) the speeddome. The early session's for young kids/beginners..

I'm prepping for the women's only nights starting in April. I need to find a track bike that fits...

No kids at this abode!

Can someone explain the Kieren to me. I have seen it raced, and know the basic format but it does not really make sense to me. What is the point of following the bike for the laps etc etc?

That threw me off, no worries... no kids, no chains around your ankles. :)
It was called midland-bassendean cycling club, when they raced around the oval, way back.
I was a member. 8)
Ladies night should be good, hope it goes well for your bike-hunt.
You could take a look at this post-

Keirin as I know it, from my time, was from the Japanese, met Nakano at his first trip
outside Japan, at the Worlds. Back in Japan he was a top racer, in Keirin, the setup
is much like horse-racing with starting stalls, no derney, one or two laps, and just a
straight out Sprint, just go for it, and it has betting on a Totalisator. Huge crowds.

Somehow around 2000, it was introduced into the west, as the event you describe.
Keirin: Riders are paced by a derny (a motor-powered bike with pedals) or a motorcycle.
The riders are not permitted to move in front of the derny until it pulls to the side of the track
with 2 ½ laps remaining. It is an extremely tactical race based on speed and power.
To me it's just a motor-paced scratch race that we raced plenty of during my time.
Tactics would be much as I have described before, for a scratch race.
Someone else here probably knows more of it, than me.
But that's my take, FME.

Gary,
During the 70's very little was known in the West about Keirin (Japanese).
Was lucky enough at the time to be able to view, the videos of someone
who had raced there. The Keirin system was awesome, a college of cycling.
You had to basically pass exams, written and practical to qualify to compete.
Huge crowds, and a big gambling budget to work with. (Totalisator)
You asked (though not on this topic)
What would you have done different Brenton?
I was invited to go and compete in Japan, and didn't. Should have.
That's what I would have done different. Think, Keirin would have been right for me.
Up till the time I competed in the World's, Keirin riders had not bothered to
come and compete. They were making too much money back in Japan.
The rest is history, once they came, they conquered.
Cheers

The Japanese when they do something, they really go the whole hog and nail it Brenton. :)

I am with you on Keirin racing Brenton, it was certainly a big money maker over here.

On another note, I think it was a Japanese rider that held the flying 200mtrs record in the 70s of around 9.8 or 9.9secs at the time.

True Gary.
We could do worse than emulate the organised stoicism of the Japanese,
during these trying times they are now going through. My thoughts are with them.
(no accident that tsunami is a Japanese word, they have endured a lot over the years)
And the South Eastern Coast of Australia, may well take notes after the recent rumblings
from NZ (Christchurch). Folk should just be aware.

To true Brenton!

Was listening to the radio this morning and an expert on all this activity said, Australia will get a big quake in the next couple of decades on the east coast.
We are in between two large fault lines that are connected to the NZ and Japan quakes. :( (back to topic)
