I'm interested in any advice on route planning, particularly what maps to get (and which to not bother with), and how to tell the difference between a freeway (bikes not allowed) a road and a dirt track (which i'll be avoiding at all costs).

Travelling Madrid to Munich, route advice?I'm travelling Madrid to Munich September this year (Oktoberfest woot!), it's quite a distance, and i'm not afraid to spend a couple 'rest days' on a train to catch up some distance

Re: Travelling Madrid to Munich, route advice?Maps: Michelin. Roads on which bicycles are not allowed are clearly indicated, no way you can end up on one, unless you are very, very drunk. Try to avoid the big roads, "nationales" in France, they are very busy. Dirt tracks, as well as all other roads, are indicated on Michelin maps. Go and try viamichelin.fr, they have a "vélo" tick box, but you will have to split the journey as they plan only 200 km at a time.
