Surely there's a shedload of videos on the choob? :?
Too high a gear and not enough of a forward weight shift would be the showstoppers IMO.
...whatever the road rules, self-preservation is the absolute priority for a cyclist when mixing it with motorised traffic.

I did know that friction did that but I think on grass im less scared of falling and shifting my weight beyond what I do on pavement.

Do you know how to skip stop yet? Or whip skid?

I can skid stop now but it hurts my wrists and upper body.

I find skidding easier with risers because with drops you're like holding your arms inwards so you don't have enough force to swing your legs out... er... well something like that.

If it's hurting your wrists and upper body, I'm really sure why because when I first started skidding my knees were in pain for a while.
Wrong technique perhaps? I dunno

Depends on your gearing, but it shouldn't hurt. On my fixie I can skid sitting in the seat as normal. But I am running 42x17 so not heaps of resistance.

Or style points on Brunswick St. for that matter. Skids for the win!

Yesterday an instinctive skid saved me from rear-ending into a car.

Lady driving in front of me turns right, I also turn right keeping 2-3m behind her. She speeds up during the turn so I do too, and then just as she makes the turn she slams on the brakes.. luckily I was only riding along at around 15km so I had time to react. Only problem was I was riding on the tops with no access to my brakes on the drops, so my first instinctive thought was to mash back on the pedals and stop the bike. Skidded about 1.5m and stopped just behind her.

Moral of this story: even if you ride with both front and rear brakes, make sure you are able to skid if riding a fixed gear. It could save you from injury or damage to your bike. Being able to skid and also slow yourself down on a fixie is great as a method of slowing down/stopping if you dont have access to your brakes. I have no idea how I would have went if the same thing happened to me while riding a bike with a freewheel.. I probably would had crashed into her car and she would blame me for it..

ED: I have to comment that this occurred on a main street within my Uni campus, speed limit is 30km/ph. I wasn't surprised that she turned and then stopped as it often happens as the campus car parks are a little confusing for first time visitors. Rather than it being a case of her being malicious, I think it was more a case that she was lost and concentrating on trying to find a parking place that check for people driving behind her. Another reason to always ride defensively, be alert, and expect the unexpected.

Riding through uni carparks is quite a drag, as well as riding through uni...

+1. Doesn't look as sick though if you are a hipster.

I am riding 46x18 but haven't really tried busting any skids, wouldn't mind being able to but not that many skid patches on my setup vs other higher gearing setups.

I have a front brake and still wouldn't mind a better one - pretty easy reaching for the brake on riser bars, as it is on brake hoods as well.

I'm running 48x16 on my fixed and am able to skid fairly easily once I've got a bit of speed. Although I've managed to snap my toe straps skidding fairly severely down a hill and break through my plastic toe clips

Time for some heavy-duty foot straps. I know I wouldn't want my straps to break under any circumstance, especially not mid-skid down a hill.

I made some 'feet-belts' myself out of some leftover seatbelt webbing and velcro. Didn't take too long and they work well. Alternatively you can just buy pre-made ones for around $50.

How can we burn if the pit is bottomless? Where is the heat source coming from?
