first off, congrats to the aussies for cleaning up.

however, without meaning to belittle these great achievements, i find the media's coverage frustrating. they love headlines like "aussie world champ!" for obscure stuff like the omnium. the uninformed would believe this was a huge triumph, while ignoring gossy's win at MSR - which frankly dwarfs most of the world championship track titles for status - probably assuming it was a local race against some italians. is it too much to ask for sports editors to have a clue about what they're reporting on?

Jump on all the UK media sites and read some of the stuff they're writing ... They're treating it like the English don't even care and they're "peaking" for 2012... I think they're starting to feel the weight of expectation for next year to be honest. Particuarly in regards to Hoy and Pendleton !!

For an absolute chnage, the Adelaide Advertiser actually had an article on Gossy's MSR win, but bugger all about the track successes, which is odd , as some of the guys come from SA - Bobridge, Durbridge - something about -idges ?

Has anyone been watching the Track World Champs in the Netherlands at the moment??
Michael Freiberg won the most gruelling event the Omnium and is an absolute freak!! In the last kilometre time trial he needed a top 9 finish and results to go his way and he got there in 6th and a 4 point win overall.

Watched some of the highlights package on SBS last night - to see the emotion on Freibergs face was brilliant - 20 years old anda WC at Senior level !!!

Perkins holding off Sir Hoy was a pretty good highlight as well !!!

Cyclists to fly the flag at London Olympics

THE stunning success of Australia's track cyclists at the world championships has raised the possibility of them replacing the swimmers as the nation's flagship team at next year's Olympics.

Spearheaded by Anna Meares, they enjoyed a record-breaking week at Apeldoorn in the Netherlands, powering to eight gold medals, including victories in six of the 10 Olympic events.

With Australia ending last year without a swimmer ranked No. 1 in the world in an Olympic event, the cyclists appear to be filling the breach 16 months out from the London Games.

Advertisement: Story continues below But in between the smiles and tears following Australia's best medal haul at a world championships - eight gold, two silver and one bronze - was the reality that the job is far from done.

''The really big competitors in the world have yet to really raise their hands,'' Cycling Australia national performance director Kevin Tabotta warned. ''That is the challenge we have to lift to.''

Great Britain has huge expectations in track cycling for the London Olympics after dominating the 2008 Beijing Games, where Australia disappointed and immediately set about rebuilding.

Britain's performance director Dave Brailsford claimed he wasn't worried about the resurgent Australians after his team collected the second-most medals - just one gold, plus three silver and five bronze.

''They have had a great championships but we are not concerned about other nations at the moment,'' Brailsford said. ''I wouldn't be overly concerned by the Australians. There's nothing in it.''

Athens Olympic gold medallist Meares enjoyed a breakthrough competition, winning the team sprint, sprint and keirin.

Her win over British arch-rival Victoria Pendleton on the way to her maiden sprint world title was enormous as a psychological fillip going towards London 2012.

The Poms are really sulking now, Barilsford has siad that they performed well to get the single gold, and are now debating attending the WC meet in 20112 in melbourne, citing that it's not worth travelling that far so close to the Olympics.
