The Tour de Cure Thread

- 1 in 2 Australians will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85.
- The most common cancers in Australia (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer)
are prostate, colorectal (bowel), breast, melanoma and lung cancer.
- Cancer costs $3.8 billion in direct health system costs (7.2%).
Tour de Cure http://www.tourdecure.com.au/
On the 1st April I and 55 other riders will be riding 1,379km from Sydney to Melbourne in 10 days, we will be climbing almost 12,000m during this time.
Since 2007 Tour de Cure has raised over $3.8million for cancer research, support and prevention projects. It is a great cause that was started 5 years ago by two cycling buddies over a coffee and has grown into an event that raised 1.8 million last year alone.
As all the the other riders this year I have a minimum fundraising target off $12,000, $2,000 of which I have already donated personally. I wanted to give other fellow cyclists the opportunity to donate to what I think is a great cause and a very functiional and effective charity. If you would like to donate please go to my fundraising page were you can also learn more about me and my personal reasons for doing this ride http://www.tourdecure.com.au/index.php/ ... member/269
For those people interested in where the money goes each year have a read here http://www.tourdecure.com.au/index.php/ ... money-goes last year 70 cents in every dollar went to charity, this is much higher than most charities and well above what the ATO stipulates a charity must give.
I completely understand that at this time of the year many have already given to flood victims, other cancer charities and made donations in general, if you are able to help in other ways for TDC or make a donation of services or items to auction off etc. please let me know. as everything helps.
Thanks for taking the time to read this thread, I've included a course map for those interested below, as well a video explaining a bit more about the charity and the ride. The website is also full of lots of useful information for any questions I may not have answered.
PS. I have spoken to the owner of this site and seeked approval for this post.

My father in law died from liver cancer in October last year and I have been trying to see how I could do a ride like this to raise some money, now I have a target that I can aim for. I would love to do this years event but am WAY underprepared and could not get the leave from work. So April 2012 it is.
Look out for a donation in the next few days.
Cheers
Carl

To answer your question each year they open up expressions of interest for people who would like to ride (normally around August for the following year) you write a submission on your reasons for wanting to participate and each submissions is reviewed. I think we had about 120 submissions for this years ride so not everyone get's in. But this was my first year and I was accepted and I'm nobody special so it's very possible to get a spot on next years ride.
As well as riding there is also the option to be part of the support crew (they drive the cars and help out with everything). This still requires you to fundraise money and you are just as (if not more) important than the riders. Quite a few riders started off as a support crew and got inspired and fit and rode the following year.
There are also guest rider sections that you can ride one day and still fundraise I think most of these are full this year but if you are interested PM and I'll double check. The charity is also always keen on other ways to help, many people do their own fundraising or mini events which can be done at any time it just needs to be agreed with the TDC organisers.
Lots more info here http://www.tourdecure.com.au/index.php/ ... t-involved
Also feel free to PM me and I'm happy to put you in touch with the right people if you want to get involved.
Thanks

Good luck for the ride, but can't see a link to sponsor/donate for you directly ?
Edit - Doh RTFP. Found it ...
Have lost one family member to cancer, and a second is sadly in the final stages.
Will look into doing the ride next year.
Let me know a link, and some funds will be on the way.
Donation done You'd think you would get the bank to waive the 2% fee on the card transaction wouldn't you for such a cause ..
Cheers

I totally agree about the 2% I know they are looking at different options next year to try and get around this.
Thanks again.

Just a quick message to say I havent forgotten about this. I will log on tomorrow and put some money in.
My time has been taken up organising my ride from Phillip Island to Wollongong this October that I mentioned to you. Once it is up and running I will show you the planned route. Looking good though.
Cheers
