Hurstville Velodrome Petition

Postby bigfriendlyvegan » Fri Apr 15, 2011 10:11 pm

While it probably won't make a difference, here's a petition to save the Hurstville Velodrome.

Apparently AFL is a better use of the ground than cycling.

We should all sign this. This is an attack on what few cycling facility we all have.

It has cost the council nothing, the cycling club has poured many thousands of dollars into the general facility and this is how they repay them.

cheers

Hurstville Council told Cyclingnews that: "No decision has been made on the future use of the site therefore the question is irrelevant."

Sounds very officious. Wonder if there are any Wollongong council shenanigans going on.

In the SMH today. Get some cricketers onside!

http://www.smh.com.au/sport/cycling/wor ... 1dwxm.html

Penny-farthings once raced on what is now Hurstville Oval, even before the cycling club formed in 1909. The oval also has a proud history of cricket - Sir Donald Bradman was a member of the St George District Cricket Club for seven years until 1933 - and rugby league, which have co-existed with cycling for almost a century.

Phill Bates, from the cycling club, is furious that it was not consulted by the council when the draft plan of management for Hurstville Oval was created. The cricket club, which regularly uses the oval, Cricket NSW and the AFL (which does not use it at present) were consulted. The draft plan proposed removing the track to widen the oval for ''other sports'', most likely AFL, Mr Bates said.

A spokeswoman for the council said removal of the track was only one option. ''[The] council needs to provide sporting/recreational facilities that reflect the changing needs of the whole community'', she said.

The council will consider the fate of the velodrome at its meeting next month.

The more attention to the issue the better. Then council can't do anything secretly. I think the Hurstville oval, like the Lidcombe oval, is a great example of sharing space and facilities. Surely there are standalone fields that can have their corners rounded to provide multi sport fields.

Thanks for scanning the rags - I don't bother with the corporate media anymore.

It got prominent coverage on the front page online so could not miss it.

Don't despair bfv. We can but try. How does that line go - better to have a go and fail than not having a go at all.

Yay! The Heritage Listing idea is great. If it's as hard to knock down a velodrome as it is to install a light switch in a heritage house, then the velodrome will be there for the next millennium. I plan on getting my kids on the track later this year and I want them to have places to go.

just heard it on the radio, (good to hear this topic made the news) that the Hurstville council last light met and voted to keep the velodrome..

common sense wins again over AFL...

which - a bit off topic - reminds me about the AFL ground the Baulkham HIlls council built ( albeit with a $2million donation from the swans) in place of a busy and popular junior motorcross track. The Oval hardly gets any afl use, but the cricketers love it !
