which doctor to go to for hip joint problem?

Postby jeff_o » Sat Mar 12, 2011 12:48 am

2 years ago I believe I pulled a pelvic muscle at the gym. I felt the muscle froze and went to a chiropractor. he was able to identify and break the frozen muscle, but then whenever i overdo something like ride hard or do full squats.... the same spot hip joint (where the leg bone attaches to the pelvis) gets painful to a point of limping for a few days and then goes away.

I'm not sure if I should go to a chiro, ortho, physio, PT? This has been a hindrance to riding :(

Start with your family doctor.
Bianchi, Ridley, Tern, Montague and All things Apple :)

I have a similar injury to my right hip which I believe is linked to a bike accident I had 9 months ago and not being unclipped when I came off the bike. The injury is still hanging around but nothing like the problems I was having about 4 to 5 months after the accident. I just got more sore over time and finally went to get it addressed.

I found the treatment clinic at the NSW Institute of Sport (Sydney Olympic Park) very good. Their rates were competitive and of course - they have a focus on sports injuries. They also have a range of sports injury specialists under the one roof.

Being an enthusiastic cyclist - I have a tendency to spend all my excercise effort on the bike. I did get feedback from the NSWIS physio that I should invest some time in stretching and other sporting activity to balance the cycling and avoid injuries from lack of flex + one-dimensional excercise regime. He saw that as a key to fully recovering from the injury I sustained. I am failing miserably on implementing his advice!!!!

Hip joint pain is typically described as groin pain. If it's at the side or rear, it's muscular or lumbar spine related. If I had a hip problem, the orthopod I would see would be Ali Gursel at Parramatta or Macquarie uni hospital. but maybe see someone for an opinion first, preferably from someone who doesn't break frozen muscle (whatever that means)

this reply is a bit late, but for what it's worth, if i think i have something that could be serious, i see a "sports medicine doctor" (actually they're officially only GPs (due to govt regulation)) - we have a couple of clinics in Melb that specialise in that area. Typically they'll send me off for scans, and then i'll work with the physios (at the same clinic) to treat the problem.
