Apparently AFL is a better use of the ground than cycling.

It has cost the council nothing, the cycling club has poured many thousands of dollars into the general facility and this is how they repay them.
cheers
Glenn

Hurstville Council told Cyclingnews that: "No decision has been made on the future use of the site therefore the question is irrelevant."
Sounds very officious. Wonder if there are any Wollongong council shenanigans going on.

Penny-farthings once raced on what is now Hurstville Oval, even before the cycling club formed in 1909. The oval also has a proud history of cricket - Sir Donald Bradman was a member of the St George District Cricket Club for seven years until 1933 - and rugby league, which have co-existed with cycling for almost a century.
Phill Bates, from the cycling club, is furious that it was not consulted by the council when the draft plan of management for Hurstville Oval was created. The cricket club, which regularly uses the oval, Cricket NSW and the AFL (which does not use it at present) were consulted. The draft plan proposed removing the track to widen the oval for ''other sports'', most likely AFL, Mr Bates said.
A spokeswoman for the council said removal of the track was only one option. ''[The] council needs to provide sporting/recreational facilities that reflect the changing needs of the whole community'', she said.
The council will consider the fate of the velodrome at its meeting next month.

Don't despair bfv. We can but try. How does that line go - better to have a go and fail than not having a go at all.

common sense wins again over AFL...
which - a bit off topic - reminds me about the AFL ground the Baulkham HIlls council built ( albeit with a $2million donation from the swans) in place of a busy and popular junior motorcross track. The Oval hardly gets any afl use, but the cricketers love it !
