Keeping your face looking pretty - winter tips and tricks?

Postby sarahactivated » Tue May 03, 2011 10:36 pm

It's winter now..kind of.

I love cycling but have noticed that my skin is taking a beating. Rugged, cracked skin doesn't look as sexy on the ladies as it does on the men :)

Does anyone have any tips for keeping your face from falling off in the wind and cold?

I read somewhere that Vaseline keeps your skin from being ravaged by the wind chill. Do you have your own methods?

I wear a base layer (intended to prepare the skin for make up) as a moisturizer because it's thicker, I put it on every morning and carry lip gloss with me, especially when it's windy.

Exfoliate often and moisterize your entire body morning and night.

You still get dry skin but not as often and it's less apparent

Start with a face like mine - it doesn't then get any worse

Pre-ride Moisturiser, body and face but lip balm is the most important. Cracked lips painful. Also spare make up kit and moisturiser at work. SPF15+ get thicker moisturisers eg lanolin based if you dry out quickly. Wear full length gloves.

Commonsense for the most part. Where it is dry, moisturise!

my winter tip is to wear a brown paper bag on my head. That makes my face look pretty - and protects everyone looking my way.

Do you put the base layer before you cycle? Or once you get to work? Lip gloss is definitely a must for me too. Blistex!

Haha. You're too funny. But remember, a unicycle takes 10 years off.

Yes. Definitely. I think I'll make "pre-moisturize" a part of my morning routine. Question is, which one. I've had my eye on Cetaphil. Is that a lanolin based one?

This can't be safe!

I put the base layer on before, I don't commute, I do spend about 20hours on the bike though and still have soft smooth skin. If I was commutting I would wash my face and re-apply.

There's a product I reviewed for BNA that I use all the time now, it's called, 'workout zone' and their slogan is sweat yourself beautiful

I use a black silk balaclava. Keeps me looking beautiful and freaks-out the peds. Also, if you want to knock-over a servo while on an early morning ride you have the disguise and the getaway vehicle all ready to go! :D

I've switched to Aldi face creams. I also use sorbolene (hands, elbows, knees - the dry spots) and some SPF lotion (neck, nape, shoulders). So a combo of all three. I had an allergic reaction with the Aldi decolletage cream so have never used it again.

Have never used Cetaphil. My suggestion for lanolin is if you really really get dry skin but it can also be a bit greasy. My skin is easily moisturised with sorbolene hence I use that for non-face parts.

+1 - It is cheap, smells good and works a treat. I use it before and after getting out on my bike, especially when it is windy.

You just have to cover it up - you're probably getting windburn

i've got a little lycra face thingy - like a ninja setup, has a little slit & covers my scalp & face.
Without it dry & burnt cheeks/lips etc.
& of course moisturise as you're doing.

Yah! I've wondered about wearing a mask. I definitely get wind burn and sun damage. But I've never seen anybody around here actually wear one of these and I don't want to freak anyone out...?
What's your experience with that?

Does anyone use Vaseline on their face? I've been doing that lately just on my cheekbones, my nose and forehead.

It's getting a bit nippy here in Perth.

Guess I'll be shopping around for a mask sometime soon!

Ride bacwards. If you are able to do this, the butt cream comes back into play. If your butt looks better than your face like mine does, it needs protecting

There's always the old ringers cure for chapped lips.
Kiss a cow on the arse

Why does it work, because it stops you licking your lips.
