Travelled along the new section yesterday and today. Quite nice now not having to go thru tech park. So for those travelling South along Logan road, take the bike path as soon as you go under the motorway after garden City and you will come out just he otherside of the Gateway overpass on Logan road.

Just when I thought it was all good now for winter commuting the council decides to rip up the concrete pathway between Greenslopes and Stones Cnr and now have to resort to cycling on the grass/mud/slush/bark chips :(

Yeah they have made a mess of that, I jump on the road through there now but have to carry my bike up stairs. Going to try and stay on the road all the way through to the bowls club tonight, see how that goes.

Found an okay route and that is to use the roads to the east of the waterway. So coming from the city instead of ducking under Cornwall st come off the track to the left and cross over Cornwall into Ernest, cross over Juliette into Pine then right into Pear St, right onto Ridge St and up onto the pathway which joins back up before you go under the motorway. Just a short section of grass but don't need to get off the bike that way.

If you find an better route let me know.

cheers

Don't quite understand why they have ripped up existing concrete to replace with slightly wider concrete, yet do nothing about the Tarragindi section?
Well, I guess I do. It's cheaper to replace concrete in Greenslopes than build bridges in Tarragindi.

According to this PDF http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/~/media/5d67d ... bflyer.pdf
The next section to be started is the section from Birdwood Road possibly to the new concrete they will lay in Greenslopes. This leaves the Gaza Road to Birdwood Road section in Taragindi but this is slated not to start for quite a while (2015).

Latest Qld Release about cycle network

Excellent. So people that already have an off road bike path to the city are going to have an even better one made for them while people on the northside have to battle with cars to get to the city. Or more likely, not ride at all. :(

Do you know of any pollies that might wish to take up the fight for better cycling infastructure on the northside????

Can-do might be interested as he is running for a seat on the northside!

I've got a dream where Brisbane is the most bike-friendly city in the world... where there are bike tunnels alongside bus tunnels to all major suburbs.

Sure it'd cost millions, but it'd save a whole lot of pollution and get the population a lot healthier than what it is!

This fella is a bike advocate. http://www.northgateward.org/

To my knowledge, he was instrumental in getting the Soorley Trail wider than its non cycling designers originally intended, continuously tries to get KBB trail upgraded (see article on website re Shaw Road crossing), and Nundah Criterium Circuit is his baby. He races with HPRW too.

He was the guy who gave the introduction to crit racing in bike week :)

I tried to ride through there with my family one day in the afternoon peak hour. The stream of traffic was so consistent that after nearly ten minutes of waiting for a break I just walked out and held my hand up. Some reasonable person stopped for us.

It is ridiculous from around 6.30-7.45a. and 5-6p, as you probably know with your pre work Nudgee Beach runs.
I noted in the Shaw Rd docs that council claims only 3 complaints were received about the Shaw Rd crossing. I think that needs to be ramped up. :)

An underpass should have been put in 30 years ago. My view is under Shaw Rd with the creek. This would also allow quicker draining of flood waters under the bridge and not lead to the erosion problems they had upstream from the bridge in January. I'd like to know what the repair bill was for that.

THere's no doubt if safe and more cycling infrastructure was built, more people would cycle....especially on the north side which is pretty flat for the most part. Busways with cycle paths attached would have seemed an obvious option.

Would be nice if the BCC kept the paths cleaner and better maintained too. In my experience the Soorley Trail is most dirtied by council contractors and staff.

Kim tells me approval has been given for a cycling clubhouse at Nundah Criterium circuit. Should smarten things up a bit, as long as it doesn't get all overly officious. Night lights would be nice.

Hey Comedian you need to keep things in perspective.

A u-bute "Cycle Network" is promised for us by the Premier.
She has 20 years to deliver it, according to the document she refers to.
In 20 years time if it has not been delvered you will be hard pressed to remember who it was who tried to bulldust you.

Sally-Anne Atkinson delivered this city a pretty big bonus with the Coro drive bikeway in 1988.
Considering how little progress has been made in the 23 years since then, what do you think is the chance that we will have a "Cycle Network" 20 years from now ?

My daughter is 7 now and I want her to have an off road bikepath to the cbd by the time she has to go to uni. They have got 11 years to do it. Its peanuts in the scheme of things when they can pour billions into car infrastructure.

I want this because I want my daughter to grow up and be free of cars and be a heathy young woman.

I'm a selfish so and so. I give it somewhere between none and buckleys.

I mean really? How hard can it be? People just have to want it.

Is the next section the narrow Tarragindi track? It would be great if this rough, narrow part was fixed up.

I spoke with the Project Manager who overlooked the concrete replacement and he believes the track the other side of the Freeway (Tarragindi side) may not get done due to the V1 bikeway next section being done. he wasn't sure but easy to find out, jump on the councils website and post a query in one of their online requests and someone will get back to you.

cheers

Brilliant piece of planning around the new busway at Buranda, after just finishing laying new grass and landscaping next to the bike path near Fern St, they have now covered it with asphalt , for what appears to be a temporary diversion

From what I have found out. Main Roads gave late notice to the Busway team that they would like the sound barrier to be extended.

Blame main roads this time.

Has anyone heard offically or unoffically when the construction of the V1 is to start. I did not find anything in the Budget?

A friend of mine who is quite new to cycling has drawn my attention to a recent news media story about use of bicycles and infrastructure issues in Brisbane.

The article was written by a Transport Planning Specialist - not a journalist - and was published in Monday's CM.

The writer says that he is not a cyclist but makes some insightful remarks about the limitations in provisions for bicycles as a transport modality in this city.
His article contains some little gems like -
"it seems strange that a painted image of a bike on a road continues to be the primary mechanism for creating bike lanes in Qld" and -
"When the world standard, kerb-protected version of bike infrastructure is embraced wholeheartedly, A genuine cycling revolution can begin"

Sorry but I cannot paste the link to this article with my mobile device but will edit post with link later., can be found by doing Internet search using terms such as courier mail, city cycle, July 11

I actually think that bris cyclists would often be better off if most of those faded bike pictures were blanked out.
They are often to be found on routes that are either inappropriate for bikes or lead nowhere.
Then there are many examples of bike lanes which are just useless due to being available for parking of cars.

Having recently visited Melbourne I was impressed to see road verges around the inner-city which were designated for bicycles and were pleasantly wide and strictly no-parking.
And some of our Politicians think that Qld is the smart state :?:

here is the link to excellent discussion article
http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/opin ... 6091810882

I was out and about this morning, trying to find a bikeway route to Mt.Gravatt.
Sort of found a decent bikeway as far as Buranda but after that it was laughable really.
On the way back it was more effective to remain on Logan road as far as Stones Corner.
City council could quite easily make a decent bicycle lane on Logan road, it is as wide as.
And only moderate traffic volume.
But the "do-not-need-to-slow the car" type left exits to Marshall road and Juliette street are not bike friendly.
Shame.

For the Greenslopes to Tarragindi section of the bikeway there is improvement on the way.

Construction of the Veloway Cycleway Stage C: Lewisham Street to Birdwood Road commenced September 26 and is due to be finished mid-2012. The Veloway will run on the Eastern side of the freeway for most of this new section.

This is really good news. I assume with the bridge going over Birwood Rd, entry and exit will be quite easy.
looking forward to this as I have always hated Esher St section and the bumpy bit at the start of the bikeway.

Thanks for this.
cheers

Noticed they have started work on this section. You can see it from the freeway.
This should replace the worst section through Tarragindi once completed.

Should be nice when opened. Heading into the city we will probably join the bike track from Birdwood Rd after passing under the freeway. This means one will have to negotiate the peak hour traffic going on and up the freeway on ramp. Quite easy on our Sat morn rides but weekdays are a lot different.
