Pascoe bicycles - any background?

Postby dan-o » Tue Sep 01, 2009 4:18 pm

G'day

Figured I would be able to get the best answer to my question here. I've googled and searched to no avail :(

I've got a track frame bicycle, from around the early 90's, which has the decal "Pascoe" on the downtube. It is drilled for brakes.

The seat tube has a coloured decals and a location - "Crow's Next NSW"

It is made of Ishiwata 017 steel.

Any background on the company and maker? The guy I bought it from said it was a sponsor's gift when he was riding. It came with black 700c araya rims. No idea what model those are either.

It's a nice bike, just too big (56cm square from rough measurement) for me to enjoy :(

An old thread but you don't hear much about Pascoe bikes.

I've got an old Pascoe 10 speed bike that's under the house in bits.
The bike came from Kevin Pascoe Cycles, 119 Willoughby Road, Crows Nest, NSW.
It was nicknamed 'Lenny' after the cricketing fast bowler Len Pascoe.

Old 'Lenny' consists of:

Reynolds 531 SL frame with Campagnolo dropouts
Reynolds 531 fork with Campagnolo fork ends
Shimano 600 headset & brakeset
SR Sakae stem & handlebar
Gipiemme Dual Sprint crankset
Cambio Rino rear derailleur (possibly 1978 vintage) http://www.disraeligears.co.uk/Site/Rin ... leurs.html
Shimano FD-TY20 front derailleur (Singapore)
Campagnolo Triomphe down tube shifters
MKS pedals with Christophe toe clips
Ukai 27 x 1 1/4 rear rim with a Shimano hub
Araya 27 x 1 1/4 front rim with a Sunshine Gyromaster 77 hub (1977)
Kashimax seat
GL/GP/GS Brev ? mystery seatpost http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.ph ... -seat-post

One day I'll pull old 'Lenny' out and restore it to it's former glory.

Rescued an old "Lenny" today and was a bit surprised that it stayed out overnight without any takers. The parts are not of the same quality as in the previous post, but for those interested I will list the components in red for comparison:

Reynolds 531 SL frame with Campagnolo dropouts unknown, no markings
Reynolds 531 fork with Campagnolo fork ends unknown no markings
Shimano 600 headset & brakeset Ace headset, Crossbow (brand) levers and brakes
SR Sakae stem & handlebar Alp Industrial company handlebar
Gipiemme Dual Sprint crankset cranks labelled SP 'mentoring?'
Cambio Rino rear derailleur (possibly 1978 vintage) http://www.disraeligears.co.uk/Site/Rin ... leurs.html Eagle rear derralier with Shimano hanger
Shimano FD-TY20 front derailleur (Singapore) Thunderbird front derralier
Campagnolo Triomphe down tube shifters Shimano down shifters
MKS pedals with Christophe toe clips M marked on pedals
Ukai 27 x 1 1/4 rear rim with a Shimano hub No markings on rims
Araya 27 x 1 1/4 front rim with a Sunshine Gyromaster 77 hub (1977)
Kashimax seat
GL/GP/GS Brev ? mystery seatpost

There is a thread on the LHS of the rear hub. Looks to me as though another cassette could be attached here to make it a 'flip flop' multi speed bike?
Obviously mine is a very poor cousin to the bike mentioned above. But here is the info for the next person who takes home a 'stray'.

I found a few before & after resto photos of an old Pascoe:

http://www.cheekytransport.com.au/photos/?album=Pascoe

The one I have looks similar that one except for:
* A few different parts.
* Colour - yellow with blue Pascoe stickers & 2 rainbow bands on the seat tube .
* The downtube shifter mounts & the top tube cable guides on mine are brazed on.
* The head tube lugs & the fork crown on mine are a slightly 'fancier' design.

That's the 6 shots I took today. No more talk about those Campo components on some of the 'Lenny's' please.

Hey it's hard enough for some of us to download the photos, send them to a storage site, find the URL for each one and insert them without losing the post you are adding to. I thought someone might be onto me for all the pictures but somebody did ask for them.

The Pascoe Goes Out

I put some new tubes in the Pascoe and took it down town to show the boys at the bike shop. On the way home we went here:

The Cricket Hall of Fame- where else?

(Must admit these retro's take some getting used to after being spoilt with modern Campo components)

Hi,

I came across this post and thought I'd add what I know about Pascoe Cycles.

I bought a PASCOE bike in Feb 1977 direct from Kevin Pascoe. He'd adverstised it in the Trading Post, possibly because the bike was surplus, or maybe a sale had fallen through.
The bike was a fairly standard steel-framed 10 speed.

In 1980 when I wanted a custom made bike, I went back to Pascoe Cycles. He may have sold the business in between, because it seemed someone else was operating it.
Anyway, I went ahead with my purchase.
I ended up with a Reynolds 531 frame built by Frank Paino, Dura-Ace hubs, Mavic Module 3 rims, Gipiemme cranks and pedals, Galli brakes, 3TTT stem.
Being a student at the time, I was on a limited budget, and the frame was a little roughly finished in spots. It ended up with the PASCOE decals on it rather than Paino.

I was still riding the bike until about three years ago, when I realized it was just looking rather tired. Chrome was coming off the 600 Arabesque front derailleur, the inner tube was bulging through the sidewall on the front tyre, a pedal dust cap had gone west somewhere, the chain was showing rust spots and one of the brakes was sticking. Probably time to find a new home for the old Pascoe. The only issue was that I didn't want to let it go at the price someone would offer. Then I figured that the sum of the parts would be greater than the whole; yeah, break it up and sell it on eBay.

When I was looking at it again around Christmas time, a thought occurred to me, "What if I could turn it into a single-speed?" After having a look at the rear hub, I figured it would be possible. (This was the first Dura-Ace cassette freehub with splined sprockets.)

I know it's "just" a piece of machinery, but the bike and I have been a lot of places over the years. In the end, I couldn't take a faithful friend out the back of the woodshed and shoot it.

So, it's being overhauled and restored. A new dustcap has arrived in the mail today, and I'm waiting on a couple of new tyres.
Shouldn't be too long before it's back on the road!

Godd luck with your restore, Jonno.
As for mine, it's staying as is. Not the safest to ride and certainly 'uncomfortable' compared to modern bikes. I have another restore undeway (Peugeot 1975) so I don't want to spread myself too thin. And I'm wary of money pits!

I guess you have seen some of the single speeds on this forum- they certainly look good. It's amazing too that riding single speed is quite enjoyable after changing gears etc.

Thanks guys,

I suspect that it uses a lot of mental energy thinking about being in the right gear and changing gears; likely to be a different experience on a single speed.

Hi
Kevin Pascoe used to own a bike shop in the late '70s in Willoughby and Frank Paino was there the couple of times I went there. Kevin moved on to work with Clarence Street Cyclery - and, I think, still does on a part time basis. I saw him last year at the Tour Down Under, he was demonstrating Eddy Merckx bikes for Clarence Street, which are the local distributor. We had a long chat and his memory was still up to scratch. You could try the "White Pages" if you're really keen. I believe he lives in Adelaide and maybe someone from Clarence Street Cyclery would have his contact details.
