Nope. It's extremely rigid & stiff with very little side ways flex at all. Surprising I know, but it actually has a very harsh feeling to it.legsrburnin wrote:

A small pic but you get the idea:
So here it is now, a few extra parts (some sourced here), and some elbow grease later. Cost me a bit of time and $$$ to do, with some help from the LBS to do stuff I couldn't, but I think it's come up alright
I'm still tuning the derailleurs etc, and I can't say it's especially light or has top end gear, but it'll do the job

Here's a tip: Get an old inner tube (after losing the patches) and wrap it around your chainstay in overlapping coils, and tie it off at the end with a cable tie. This photo shows an example, but I tend to cover pretty much the entire drive-side chainstay, and you only need to use one cable tie at the end you finish at.

the flat bars may have to go, and will probably make it 2x10 setup, never use the big ring with the larger wheels.

That exact bike is parked in the basement of my work. While I'm not a huge Giant fan (personal fit issues), it really does seem like a do anything bike. Reminds me a lot of my mates RIP 9 Niner.

Thanks for the tip - already did this yesterday following your recommendation - a much cheaper and easier option than expensive chainstay guards.trailgumby wrote:It gets you on the trails, and that's the main thing. Gotta start somewhere!

BTW, how does that Sigma computer mount stay on?
PS: Try moving your shifters and brakes in closer to the stem/centre of the bars. That way you can get the index finger into the hook at teh end of the lever for single digit braking, and you have more fingers wrapped around the grips for better bike control.

My current XC race bike is this, 2008 Merida MATTS TFS FLX 3000 (yea merida model names are just so damn sexy...), hardtail with carbon stays, bare frame is under 1500grams. Bought the frame 2nd hand and built it up with mostly used parts.
Forks- 1998 Manitou Spyder (about 2.5 inches travel)
Cranks- Race Face Ride
Rear Derailleur- XTR
Front Derailleur- SunRace
Rear Shifter- SunRace 9spd
Front Shifter- Shimano friction thumb lever (40 grams, take that XX!)
Stem- Amoeba Scud 110mm (130grams)
Bars- Merek Carbon low riser (140grams)
Skewers- Titanium (44grams)
Front Wheel- Mavic Crossmax SL v brake specific
Rear Wheel- WTB laser beam rim, Shimano XT hub (1115grams-will have to do better eventually)
Brake Levers- Avid FR-5 (145grams)
Front Brakes- Deore v brakes
Rear Brakes- Tektro HO mechanical disc w/ 90 gram Gatorbrake starlight rotor
Tires- Maxxis Aspen- 2.1 front, 2.25 rear
Just under 10.5kg without pedals and bar ends and including bottle cage, rides beautifully.

I love Jamis bikes
I nearly purchased the 2010 dakar xct 1.0 except .. the color .. I dont like the colour
you guys out there judge whether you can live with this color (see pic below)

Ohhh yeah.....do that!! I took a hair dryer to the Anthem wheel decals (just to warm them) and stripped the wheels back to black. A quick rub down with acetone to clear off the last of the glue....much better. Less than an hours work.Mulger bill wrote:Forgot this thread...
