broken finger driving me nuts
Postby jules21 » Wed Jun 29, 2011 3:53 pm
i have a broken finger, which is on the mend. but i need to ride, as not riding is driving me stir crazy.
the problem is i can't put a glove on, due to strapped fingers. i'm seeing the surgeon tomorrow, but i'm betting he will restrap them.
i know a solution, apart from not riding which not an option, is to buy those gloves with conjoined 4th and 5th fingers. but i'm heading off overseas next Wed so they wouldn't arrive in time. yes, i know it's only 7 days, but i need to ride. as i'm in melbourne and it's very cold in the mornings, riding with no gloves is not a good option.
any ideas?

Alternatively unstrap your fingers. Put on gloves and restrap.

The R12 option with cheapies or a small cup of concrete.
First option seems the most sensible...

Should probably check with the surgeon or hand physio first about management though.
Where is the fracture?

shape cut, partially across & through the nail. 4 stitches later.....
This has buggered up my regular commuting and planned weekend rides because I'm just not confident braking with it. Basically off the treadlie until the stitches are out; probably next Monday

A mate of mine is riding with a broken index finger from a motorbike accident and has been taping his fingers outside the glove. It helps a little, but nothing completely relieve pain from a break. If it is still not healed enough to use, the vibrations might see it floating apart.

this will make it easier to fit underneath a glove - i can probably tape the glove fingers together as suggested.
sogood, i'm in melbourne, you're in sydney. i need gloves down here
commurider, given that 3 Ti screws cost me over $1k, i dread to think of how much a Ti prosthetic hand would cost!

suddenly my 4 stitches and a 2 day Medicare turnaround refund of about 80% don't seem so bad.jules21 wrote:... given that 3 Ti screws cost me over $1k...

I'll see your three and raise you another four plus a plate... thanks to Mr Bogan Bike Haterjules21 wrote:commurider, given that 3 Ti screws cost me over $1k, i dread to think of how much a Ti prosthetic hand would cost!
Still got 'em 18 months later... I still wince sometimes when someone tries to win the handshake
Not my finger, though.. was the fifth metacarpal, that runs into the pinkie finger on my right hand.
Best of luck with the healing. PM me your address and I'll send you a free cup of cement to drink before you do your physiotherapy exercises.

i always think of the movie The Star Chamber when i am reminded about your incident. there are few things in life that ever make me want to turn to anger, that is one of them.trailgumby wrote:I'll see your three and raise you another four plus a plate... thanks to Mr Bogan Bike Hater

I must admit I was tempted to channel Eddie Murphy and go visit him late one night and shove a few bananas up his exhaust pipe.jules21 wrote:i always think of the movie The Star Chamber when i am reminded about your incident. there are few things in life that ever make me want to turn to anger, that is one of them.trailgumby wrote:I'll see your three and raise you another four plus a plate... thanks to Mr Bogan Bike Hater

The legacy is I don't do moron motorists so well any more. There are a couple of them missing mirrors... You'd be surprised how easy it is to ... ahem ... remove them if you know which direction to twist. Time to follow up on those anger management sessions...

Why don't you just wait for one of the other three seasons to happen in that day and go out then?jules21 wrote:sogood, i'm in melbourne, you're in sydney. i need gloves down here

i've had trouble with dodgy neighbours that have made me consider that sort of thing, but there's such a risk it will escalate into a war that i am reluctant to.trailgumby wrote: I must admit I was tempted to channel Eddie Murphy and go visit him late one night and shove a few bananas up his exhaust pipe.
although i've never done this, i've seriously considered it a few times. frankly, some of them deserve to lose mirrors.trailgumby wrote:The legacy is I don't do moron motorists so well any more.
