Liggett & Sherwen

Postby avroncotton » Sun Jul 03, 2011 6:44 pm

Now don't get me wrong I really like the L & S commentary, and I have met Phil and he is a top bloke. But, I think they are being paid far too many American Dollars. There are far to many 'mile' references and they are 'roundabouts' guys not 'Traffic Circles". It is a European race. When are the yanks going to join the rest of the world with decimalization. Rant over. Viv Le Tour!

It's not just the old, anceint and fossilised Poms that talk about miles, there's pretty much no penetration of metric measurement into the UK, just like the US.

As a recovering Pom myself, it took a few years of living in NZ with road signs in Km for me to get used to the idea. I can't imagine using imperial units now, doesn't make any sense.

On L & S - it somehow doesn't feel like a proper bike race without them, although I have been enjoying the Dutch and Belgian commentaries on the spring classics via steephill.tv

My favourite quote:
"He's riding like a man possessed!"

I get the impression they just remix now the recordings of all the old commentary.

With all the hyperbole, "miles" just adds that 1.67 multiple.

Having listened to L&S commentating the TdF on Ch4 when living in the UK as a kid, I cannot imagine listening to it without them. They are the Murray Walker of cycling, sure may make the odd funny comment. Like Murray Walker saying "(cant remember the diver) is leading apart from the 5 driver in front of him.....!"

Having listened to the commentary on Europsort this year for the Giro and other events, I am so glad we have L&S. The other options are just so boring, espcially the Irish guy (is it Yates??).
How do you like them ******* apples???

I wasn't even born in 1970 yet still quote my height in feet and inches, why? As a kid in primary school I got interested in basketball and played for a local club along with a few of my school mates, we also watched a lot of NBA and collected NBA trading cards. As we grew, we always wanted to compare our height to the stats on the cards of our favourite players, hence feet and inches. I guess it just kind of stuck, I'm not even sure what 6'2" converts too. I don't use imperial units for anything else.

For memory didn't the coverage of the TDU only have metric units in it? Just remember that earlier in the year I didn't notice the imperial units used during the cometary but later, might have been the Tour of Cal., that it was mainly in imperial with metric conversions.

But L&S make cycling like previously mentioned. Some of the statements made are all part of the fun and add interest to the 2 hours of a group of men riding bikes in the sprinter stages.

Their commentary makes the TdF really a French tourism promo travelogue with a bike race happily being incidental.

i think there should be a drinking game with the TdF...everytime they talk about an abbey, grand lieu, chateau, the River Loire, birdwatching, otters, beetles, shot of cognac. Flat tyre, pissbreak, two shots.

Talk feet for vertical, metric (metres) for horizontal seperation. Talk pounds for aircraft made in America, litres for European and Kilograms for Japanese.

Good System eh?

Phil and Paul are old. And what exactly is wrong with that? I think some of you may be a bit "ageist".

Maybe we could get Lance to do the commentary, he's retired. Then we could get CNN involved, a couple of American sports commentators with really white teeth, some dancing girls. Budweiser could come on board as a major sponsor.

And then you get car tyres - width is metric, but rim diameter is imperial ?

I miss the ol' "... and he goes round and round and round..." from Walker !!!

yeah dunno what the go is now, but Military, Aero & Electronics stayed in Imperial even when we went to metric.
We asked the US to supply everything in Metric - they said no.

Building materials - its all still imperial, they say 2200 but its an 8ft'er
they of course didnt re-do all the manufacturing machines ;)
